Theresa May's EU withdrawal deal has been rejected by MPs by an overwhelming majority for a second time, with just 17 days to go to Brexit. MPs voted down the prime minister's deal by 149 - a smaller margin than when they rejected it in January. Mrs May said MPs will now get a vote on whether the UK should leave the EU without a deal and, if that fails, on whether Brexit should be delayed. She said Tory MPs will get a free vote on a no-deal Brexit. That means they can vote with their conscience rather than following…
United States of America (USA), yesterday, said it is actively involved with political happenings in the country, particularly regarding 2019 elections. US Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of African Affairs, Tibor Nagy, in a telephonic press briefing with journalists across Africa, yesterday, recalled efforts of the US Embassy in Abuja, under the headship of Mr Stuart Symington, and his team, to ensure peaceful polls in the country. Nagy said in the pre-election period, in the election period and in the post-election period, they are providing phenomenal guidance to Washington on how the United States Government should and should not respond…
A Greek man said he missed the Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed just after taking off from Addis Ababa by mere minutes, in a Facebook post that has now been shared thousands of times. In a post called "My Lucky Day," Antonis Mavropoulos shared an image of what appears to be his boarding pass and says he arrived at his gate just after boarding had finished on Sunday morning. "When I arrived, boarding was closed and I watched the last passengers in (the) tunnel go in. I screamed to put me in but they didn't allow it," he wrote. The…
Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has listed at least 19 items which it said remained prohibited for the over 1.8 million candidates taking the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. The board said in its weekly bulletin obtained by our correspondent on Monday that the items were prohibited during its examinations, warning that candidates who breached the directive would be disallowed from taking UTME. The board said, “To ensure that our examinations meet best global practices, the board has prohibited the use of the following items during its exams. They are watches, pens or biros, mobile phones or similar electronic devices,…
Britain and the European Union emerged from last-minute talks late Monday to announce they had finally removed the biggest roadblock to their Brexit divorce deal, only hours before the U.K. Parliament was due to decide the fate of Prime Minister Theresa May’s hard-won plan to leave the EU. On the eve of Tuesday’s vote in London, May flew to Strasbourg, France, to seek revisions, guarantees or other changes from European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker that would persuade reluctant British legislators to back her withdrawal agreement with the EU, which they resoundingly rejected in January. At a joint news conference, May…
What little was left was heartbreaking: A battered passport. A shredded book. Business cards in many languages. Searchers in white gloves and canvas shoes picked their way through the scattered remains of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 for a second day on Monday, gingerly lifting from the scorched earth the pieces of 157 lives. The tattered book, its pages singed, appeared to be about macroeconomics, its passages highlighted by a careful reader in yellow and pink. There was a shattered keyboard. And playfully printed T-shirts. There was even a plaintively ringing mobile phone, picked up by a stranger and silenced. The…
Three Austrian physicians. The co-founder of an international aid organization. A career ambassador. The wife and children of a Slovak legislator. A Nigerian-born Canadian college professor, author and satirist. They were all among the 157 people from 35 countries who died Sunday morning when an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 jetliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa en route to Nairobi, Kenya. Here are some of their stories. ___ Kenya: 32 victims — Hussein Swaleh, the former secretary general of the Football Kenya Federation, was named as being among the dead by Sofapaka Football Club. He was due…
Sunday’s devastating plane crash in Ethiopia could renew safety questions about the newest version of Boeing’s popular 737 airliner. The Boeing 737 Max 8 operated by Ethiopian Airlines crashed shortly after taking off from the capital of Addis Ababa, killing all 157 people on board. The plane was new. The weather was clear. Yet something was wrong, and the pilots tried to return to the airport. They never made it. In those circumstances, the accident is eerily similar to an October crash in which a 737 Max 8 flown by Indonesia’s Lion Air plunged into the Java Sea minutes after…
President Muhammadu Buhari, his predecessor, Mr Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have all felicitated with former President Olusegun Obasanjo as he celebrated his 82nd birthday on Tuesday. Mr Buhari, in a statement by his spokesperson, Mr Garba Shehu described Mr Obasanjo as “a passionate and great patriot who deserves accolades for his immeasurable contributions to our democracy and national unity.” Obasanjo supported Buhari during 2015 elections. He however, switched his allegiance to his former deputy, Mr Atiku Abubakar, during 2019 elections. Buhari defeated Mr Abubakar to win a second term. Buhari in the statement Tuesday acknowledged that…
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday said he would continue to criticise President Muhammadu Buhari until he improves his style of governance. He also said he is qualified to criticise any government policy and leader found wanting in the discharge of his or her duties. Mr Obasanjo stated this while speaking at his 82nd birthday lecture held in Abeokuta. He said this shortly after Alake of Egbaland, Mr Adedotun Gbadebo, urged him to stop criticising Mr Buhari. Obasanjo has been an unrelenting critic of Buhari and opposed his reelection bid. He had thrown his support behind Mr Atiku Abubakar, presidential…
