US President Donald Trump has designated Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a foreign terrorist organisation. It is the first time the US has labelled another nation's military as a terrorist organisation. Iran retaliated by declaring US forces in the Middle East as a terrorist organisation, Iran state news reported. Washington-Tehran tensions have risen since Mr Trump withdrew the US from the international Iran nuclear pact. Labelling the Guards as a terrorist organisation will allow the US to impose further sanctions - particularly affecting the business sector, given the IRGC's involvement in Iran's economy. A number of IRGC and…
Only economic growth can defuse poverty time bomb in Nigeria, Bloombergsaid in an editorial on Sunday. The New York-based international news agency, which described President Muhammadu Buhari’s record over the last four years as discouraging, wondered whether he “is up to the task” of reviving the economy. According to the editorial, one of humanity’s most hopeful developments in recent decades has been the dramatic drop in extreme poverty. It noted that in the year 2000, some 1.4 billion people lived at or below the global poverty line of $1.90 a day, adding, “Today, the number is about 600 million. This…
Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a total ban on mining activities in Zamfara State and its environs. The decision is part of fresh measures to restore peace to the state bedevilled by banditry. Hundreds of people have been killed or kidnapped by bandits in Zamfara in the past year. There have been suspicions that the criminality is a fallout of the artisanal mining of gold and lead in the state. The new measure banning mining was announced by Inspector General of the Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, while briefing State House correspondents on Sunday in Abuja. Adamu said the government…

President Muhammadu Buhari has reassured Nigerians that ending banditry remains a key priority of his administration. In a statement by Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Mr Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Saturday, Mr Buhari said that he would do whatever it takes to ensure the country’s security system confronts these public enemies with merciless determination. Buhari was reacting to recent spike in reported incidents of banditry and kidnappings in some parts of the country. The president condoled with all those affected by the unfortunate events. Buhari described as ridiculous allegation of indifference being levelled against…
There is no deal between the Presidency and embattled Mr Walter Onnoghen on his exit as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). Onnoghen who had been on suspension since January 25 following allegations of corruption against him by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), turned in his letter of resignation on Thursday. Then followed speculations that he had reached an agreement with the Presidency for the purpose of giving him a soft landing after National Judicial Commission (NJC) recommended that he should be compulsorily retired. However, highly placed Presidency sources said yesterday that at no time was a deal reached between…
Mr Walter Onnoghen’s resignation as Chief Justice of Nigeria on Friday was greeted with mixed reactions from senior lawyers, Peoples Democratic Party and ruling All Progressives Congress. Onnoghen, who was suspended from office on January 25 by Federal Government for failing to declare part of his assets, tendered his resignation letter to President Muhammadu Buhari late on Thursday, it was learnt. Surprisingly, the letter was sent to Buhari barely 24 hours after National Judicial Council reportedly recommended Onnoghen’s compulsory retirement from service after investigating allegations of misconduct levelled against him. Although the former CJN’s spokesman, Mr Awassam Bassey, has yet…
