Former President Alan Garcia mortally wounded himself with a gunshot to his head Wednesday as officers waited to arrest him in a big graft probe that has put Peru’s most prominent politicians behind bars and provoked a reckoning over corruption. Authorities broke through a door at Garcia’s mansion in a leafy, upscale neighborhood of the Peruvian capital after hearing gunfire. The 69-year-old former head of state was rushed to a hospital, where a team of doctors performed emergency surgery but could not save him. “The president, upset over this situation, knowing his absolute innocence ... had this terrible accident,” said…
North Korea said Thursday that it had test-fired a new type of “tactical guided weapon,” its first such test in nearly half a year, and a possible sign of its displeasure with deadlocked nuclear talks with the United States. The test, which didn’t appear to be of a banned mid- or long-range ballistic missile that could scuttle negotiations, allows Pyongyang to show its people it is pushing ahead with weapons development while also reassuring domestic military officials worried that diplomacy with Washington signals weakness. The North’s leader, Kim Jong Un, observed the unspecified weapon being fired Wednesday by Academy of…

Petrol landing cost now N180 per litre - FG

Landing cost of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, is N35 higher than the pump price of N145 per litre, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr Ibe Kachikwu, said on Tuesday. Kachikwu said the rise in global crude oil prices after 2016 hike in petrol price brought back subsidy. Recalling the experience of 2016, when government increased petrol price from N86.5 to N145 after months of severe scarcity, he described fuel subsidy as an emotive issue. “You have very positive argument that says, ‘Why is this happening; let’s get it out.’ Once you do it, the streets get…
The panel set up by Federal Government to investigate the crisis in National Health Insurance Scheme has recommended immediate dismissal of the Executive Secretary of the agency, Mr Usman Yusuf. The report accused Yusuf of breaching Public Procurement Act as well as Public Service Rules. The seven-man committee headed by Mr Hassan Bukar, a retired permanent secretary, nonetheless, did not recommend Yusuf for prosecution. The committee added that the NHIS boss, who has been on suspension since November 2018, had an unhealthy relationship with members of staff of the agency; local unions, health management organisations and health care providers. This,…
Notre Dame, a survivor of wars and revolutions, has stood for centuries as not merely the greatest of the Gothic cathedrals and a towering jewel of Western architecture. It has stood, in the words of one shell-shocked art expert, as “one of the great monuments to the best of civilization.” And so it was that across the globe Monday, a stunned and helpless art world wept alongside the people of France as a massive fire ravaged the beloved cathedral. “Civilization is just so fragile,” said Barbara Drake Boehm, senior curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s medieval Cloisters branch in…

No plan to remove fuel subsidy now - FG

Federal government has again clarified its stance on removal of fuel subsidy, saying it had no plan to do so in the immediate future. Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, said this on Sunday at the briefing by Nigerian delegation on the outcome of their meetings with investors and institutions at IMF/World Bank meetings in Washington DC. Ahmed spoke in reaction to IMF’s advice to the federal government to remove fuel subsidy, which might have led to panic buying in the country. Fuel queues have in the past few days appeared in many parts of Nigeria including Osun State and…
Daniel Agbolade, Ibadan Executive Director, Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), Ghana, Mr Yemi Akinbamijo, has identified the use of crude implements such as cutlasses, hoes among others, as the major reason why importation of food and other agricultural products are increasing in Africa and Nigeria in particular. He made the disclosure while delivering a paper, entitled, "New Trends in Agricultural research for development", at the closing ceremony of 50th anniversary of Institute of Agricultural Research & Training (IAR&T), Ibadan, held at the institute’s hall. He said it was unfortunate that after Nigeria and other countries in the continent…
President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday gave insight into why Leah Sharibu, who was held back by Boko Haram Islamist sect over her refusal to denounce her Christian faith a year ago, was yet to be freed. Sultan of Sokoto and President General of Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Mr Sa’ad Abubakar, has expressed worry that Nigerians have become more divided because of political differences. He said: “If Nigeria has these troubles in 2019 then, I have my fears over 2023. The signs are already on ground. Brothers no longer talk to one another. Friends are now divided in a very terrible way because they were insulting one another before the elections. Neighbours now hate each other because they belong to different political parties”. Speaking during 2019 General Assembly of the Da’awah Coordination Council of…
