Nigeria Army is replacing the military commander of the fight against Boko Haram after half a year following a string of insurgency attacks despite years of official claims the group has almost been defeated, military sources said on Wednesday. The shake-up underscores the fragility of the security situation in Nigeria's northeast, where the conflict with the Islamist insurgent group is now in its ninth year, despite assertions by President Muhammadu Buhari's administration that it is on its last legs. Ibrahim Attahiru, theatre commander of the operation against Boko Haram, is being replaced by Major General Rogers Nicholas in the wake…
Some knelt and placed their foreheads to the ground in prayer. Several carried small children. After being stranded in Libya on a failed attempt to reach Europe, more than 400 Nigerian migrants were brought home and began sharing stories of abuse and fear. "If they lock you up in a room, you hardly eat, that's number one," Ejike Ernest, one of the returnees, told The Associated Press on arrival late Tuesday in Lagos. "You'll urinate there, you'll defecate there and every morning, let me say three times a day, you will be severely beaten" until you can pay the money…
It is rare and perhaps unique for the world to interfere with a country's choice of its own capital. But that is far from the only unusual thing about Jerusalem. Here is a look at some of the extraordinary facts about the city that Israel claims as its capital, even though nearly 40 percent of its population are not Israeli citizens: HOLY HALLELUJAHJerusalem is home to key holy sites for the world's three monotheistic religions - concentrated in the Old City. The densely packed area, less than one square kilometer (one-third of a square mile), hosts the Western Wall and…
An Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has set aside its order made on May 30, freezing 16 accounts belonging to wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan. Mrs Binta Nyako withdrew the order on Tuesday on the grounds that Economic and Financial Crimes Commission which secured the freezing order failed to conduct its investigation into the alleged infractions involving the 16 accounts. The court’s decision followed an application by counsel to Mrs. Jonathan asking the court to set aside an ex-parte motion filed by EFCC for continued control of the accounts. The lawyer, Mr Mike Ozekhome, described EFCC’s motion…

The Federal Government says it has a record of 2,778 Nigerian migrants registered in “accessible” detention camps in Libya, ready for repatriation. The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Mr Tiwatope Elias-Fatiile, on Tuesday, said the country’s embassy in Libya had been visiting detention camps to identify Nigerians for registration. The ministry stated that those registered were issued Emergency Travel Certificates. Swiss government has announced that it will return $320m of the money allegedly stolen by Nigeria's late military ruler Sani Abacha. The money was frozen in 2014 by a Swiss court after a legal procedure against his son, Abba Abacha. Originally deposited in Luxembourg, it is a fraction of the billions of dollars allegedly looted during his rule from 1993 to 1998. Recovering the "Abacha loot" has been a major priority for Nigeria. President Muhammadu Buhari made the recovery of stolen assets a major part of his 2015 election campaign and this will be the largest yet. Although an agreement…
President Trump on Wednesday will order the State Department to begin moving U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, senior administration officials said, a move that fulfills a campaign promise made to religious conservatives but one that could inflame tensions across the Middle East. In his announcement, Trump will say that the U.S. government recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. One official described it as an "honest" acknowledgement of a "seven-decade old fact." “While President Trump recognizes that the status of Jerusalem is a highly sensitive issue, he does not think it will be resolved by ignoring…
