Nationwide blackout looms as DISCOs declare ‘force majeure’

A crisis looms in the power sector as electricity distribution companies, DISCOS, have declared a ‘force majeure’ over a recent government policy on Eligible Customers Regulations by Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC. ‘Force majeure’ is usually issued by parties in contract to activate a clause to inform customers that due to unforeseen circumstances beyond control they may prevents one or both parties from fulfilling their obligations under the contract. Army mandates officers, soldiers to learn Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa in 1 year

Nigerian Army has given its personnel one year to learn and be proficient in the three major Nigerian languages – Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa. “Invariably, by December 2018, all Nigerian Army personnel are expected to learn the three major Nigerian languages. “The standard of proficiency to be attained is the basic level. Performance in WAEC drops nationwide - Council chief

Only 26 per cent of the private candidates who wrote the 2017 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, SSCE, had five credits including Maths and English, representing a sharp drop in the results recorded in 2016. The percentage of candidates in this category in 2015 and 2016 examinations were 28.59 per cent and 38.50 per cent respectively. Nigeria consolidates exit from recession as economy grows 1.4% in Q3

Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 1.40 per cent in the third quarter of 2017 in real terms, being the second consecutive positive growth since the economy came out of recession in the second quarter of the year. 2018 proposed expenditure for presidential aircraft nearly doubles to N7.3bn

The Federal Government has proposed to spend N7.26 billion on Presidential Air Fleet, PAF, in the 2018 budget proposal, details by the Budget Office of the Federation have shown. Of the amount, about N4.3 billion is proposed for recurrent expenditure, while N2.8 billion would go for capital expenditure. The proposed expenditure is about 67 per cent higher than the N4.37 billion appropriation in the 2017 budget, which consisted of N3.97 billion for recurrent and N399.5 million for capital projects.
