A Marine refueling plane and a fighter jet crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Japan’s southwestern coast after a midair collision early Thursday, and rescuers found one of the seven crew members in stable condition while searching for the others, officials said. The U.S. Marine Corps said that the 2 a.m. crash involved an F/A-18 fighter jet and a KC-130 refueling aircraft during regular training after the planes took off from their base in Iwakuni, near Hiroshima in western Japan. The crash took place 320 kilometers (200 miles) off the coast. Japan’s Defense Ministry said the aircraft carrying seven crew…

Why I avoided my village for 13 years — Adeboye

General overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God, Mr Enoch Adeboye, on Tuesday revealed how he ran away from his native village for 13 years. Preaching about the power of the light of God over the darkness of evil forces on the first day of the Church’s 2018 Holy Ghost Congress at Redemption Camp, he disclosed that in the early 1960s, he ran away from Ifewara, then a village in Osun State, where he was born and raised because his father’s enemies threatened to kill him – an only son. But he said after 13 years in exile, during which…
French government caved in after Paris’ worst rioting in decades and delayed an increase in energy taxes Tuesday — but it was seen as “too little, too late” by many protesters whose anger seems increasingly focused on embattled President Emmanuel Macron. Demonstrators were back in the streets wearing their signature yellow vests. They blocked several fuel depots and, on a highway near the southern city of Aubagne, commandeered a toll booth to let motorists pass for free near a sign reading “Macron dictator.” The protests began Nov. 17 with motorists upset over the fuel tax increase, but have grown to…

Workers shut down National Assembly over pay

Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) members yesterday made good their threat to disrupt activities at National Assembly. The workers, in their numbers, shutdown National Assembly over alleged non-payment of their salary and other allowances. The two chambers of the National Assembly were barricaded by placards’ bearing workers as they stopped senators and House of Representatives members from accessing their offices. Principal officers, including Senate President Bukola Saraki, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, Speaker House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara and his deputy, Lasun Yusuff, were not left out. Some of the protesting workers took over the National Assembly lobby chanting…
A violence that broke out in four communities in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State has left dozens killed and many more injured. Hundreds of women and children have also been displaced by the violence which broke out on Monday in Urugbam, Egbor, Ipene, and Abanwan, four of the 10 communities that make up Erei clan, which predominantly occupies southwestern tip of Cross River near the border with Abia State. An indigene traced the violence to the sale of a parcel of land, used to cultivate palm fruits since 1973. The land reportedly belonged to Urugbam and Egbor…
President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday promised that he will no longer complain about the problems his administration met at its inception. According to him, lamenting Nigeria’s history of corruption and mismanagement of resources has not helped his administration much. The President spoke during his interaction with Nigerians at Kraków Holiday Inn, Poland, an event put together by Abike Dabiri, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, as part of his engagements on the sidelines of the global summit on Climate Change taking place in Poland. Instead of complaining, Mr Buhari said, he will face the challenges…
‘‘It’s real me, I assure you. I will soon celebrate my 76th birthday and I will still go strong.’’ Those were the words of President Muhammadu Buhari, Sunday in Krakow, Poland, at an interactive session with Nigerian community in the country. Responding to a question from a Nigerian in the Diaspora who wanted to know if he was real or the much talked about ‘‘Jubril from Sudan’’ – his supposed double - Mr Buhari described authors of the confusion about him as ‘‘ignorant and irreligious.’’ ‘‘A lot of people hoped that I died during my ill health. Some even reached…
Oil marketers on Sunday in Lagos gave federal government seven-day ultimatum to settle outstanding debts totalling N800 billion, failing which depots would cease operations across the country. Although the state firm, NNPC, is currently the sole importer of petrol into Nigeria, it relies on the depots of oil marketers to store and transfer petrol. Any closure of the depots by the marketers could thus lead to a fresh round of fuel scarcity similar to that witnessed in December last year. The marketers, comprising Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association (DAPPMA) and Independent Petroleum…

Leaders of the world’s largest economic powers have agreed to overhaul the global body that regulates trade disputes, but they faced resistance from President Donald Trump over the Paris accord on climate change. Here are some of the main developments at the Group of 20 summit, which wrapped up Saturday: ___ WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION All G-20 leaders called for reforming the World Trade Organization and the issue will be discussed during the group’s next summit in Osaka, Japan, in June.
