From a one-story house with mustard-colored walls off a bustling road in Mauritius, Olivier Bancoult is defying the U.K. by plotting a return to the tiny tropical island where he was born. A 55-year-old native of the remote Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, Bancoult heads a group of mostly elderly women who, like him, were expelled shortly after Britain bought the archipelago from its then-colony Mauritius in 1965. His campaign has taken him to London and the United Nations and secured him a meeting with Pope Francis. As a young boy, Bancoult and the other roughly 2,000 inhabitants of…

President Muhammadu Buhari says violent extremism is the single biggest challenge facing the image of Islam today which has been hijacked by a minority of misguided elements who are using religion to cover up their criminal agenda. Buhari said the greatest honour Muslims could do the Prophet Muhammad is to follow his shining examples of non-violence, peaceful disposition and remarkable virtues of patience. The president advised Muslims not to allow their children to be…
The total amount of power on Nigeria’s grid collapsed from a peak of 4,735.8 megawatts on Friday to as low as 145MW on Saturday but Transmission Company of Nigeria said it had been restored. Industry data obtained in Abuja on Sunday showed that the grid actually collapsed twice on November 8 and November 9, but this was refuted by TCN as it argued that the second incident occurred during the process of restoring the grid. On November 8, the country’s electricity grid recorded a partial collapse as it dropped from 4,735.8MW to 429.5MW. It, however, picked up and recorded a…

Governors from South-West, South-South, South-East and the Middle Belt have vowed they will not donate lands in their regions for herdsmen settlements despite the latest threat by herdsmen under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore. National President of the herdsmen group, Mr Abdullahi Bodejo, in a statement last weekend said governors who wanted peace in their states must establish herdsmen settlements. “You are a governor and you want to enjoy peace in your state, you don’t need any long meeting, just create a particular area for the Fulani and equip them with modern facilities,” Bodejo said. However, former President…
PRESS RELEASE The Presidency wishes to confirm that there is, on-going, an unprecedented overhaul of the nation’s seat of government, arising from which a number of political appointments have either been revoked or not renewed in the Second Term. The exercise, which has been ordered by the President, is to streamline decision-making, cut down multiple authorities and reduce the cost of administration.
