China’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday said it will take “firm counter measures” if the United States continues to interfere in Hong Kong. It said legislation signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday backing protesters in Hong Kong was a serious interference in Chinese affairs and U.S. efforts were “doomed to fail”. It warned that the United States will shoulder the consequences of China’s countermeasures if it continues to “act arbitrarily” in regards to Hong Kong. The legislation signed by Trump was approved unanimously by the U.S. Senate and by all but one lawmaker in the House of Representatives last…
A bronze cockerel at Cambridge University that had been looted in a British raid on what is now Nigeria will be repatriated. The Benin bronze, known as an "okukor", was bequeathed to Jesus College in 1930 by a former British Army officer. In 2016 it was removed from display and the Legacy of Slavery Working Party (LSWP) has recommended it be returned. Master of Jesus College Sonita Alleyne said they were not trying to "erase history". She said the decision came after "diligent and careful" work of the LSWP into the legacy of slavery at Jesus College. "We are an…
The crisis rocking Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) became messier yesterday as Senate resolved to await the inauguration of the board members before working on the commission’s 2019 and 2020 budgets proposal as submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari. While the lawmakers were confirming the appointment of 15 nominees to the board of NDDC three weeks ago, Senate President, Mr Ahmad Lawan, had stated that the current Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the commission had become vitiated. “With the completion of this process (confirmation), I am sure that any other structure that exists now (in NDDC) is vitiated. I don’t think…

Federal Government on Monday said seizures made by security agents at the country’s land borders indicated that republics of Benin and Niger were not addressing issues that led to the border closure. Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, stated this when he led a government delegation to Seme border on Monday. He explained that from the magnitude of seizures made and the number of illegal immigrants apprehended in the last two weeks, it was obvious that “nothing is being done yet by both countries – Benin and Niger – to address the challenges.” Nigeria had in August closed…
A former governor of Zamfara State, Mr Abdulaziz Yari, has asked his successor, Mr Bello Matawalle, to pay his outstanding allowances and pension. According to the former governor, the law, which provides for the entitlement of former governors, deputies, speakers and deputy speakers, was amended in March and should not be truncated. The letter read in part, “I wish to humbly draw your attention to the provision…
Nigeria’s external reserves fell to $39.9 billion last week, the lowest in 22 months. This development compounds the policy dilemma that will confront members of Monetary Policy Committee, MPC, of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, as they tackle the challenges of inflationary pressures in their meeting holding in Abuja today and tomorrow. Data from CBN shows that the latest figure is the lowest since December 2017. The reserves had been on the downward trend since July 5, 2019 due to a combination of three factors, namely, low crude oil price, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) exiting the nation’s fixed income market,…
