The report, a compilation of policy recommendations from some of the world’s leading labour and development economists, also looked at the unemployment situation in different African countries. The 36 state governors, under the umbrella of Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), yesterday said payment of consequential adjustments of the new minimum wage will depend on the finacial standing and capacity of states . Federal Executive Council (FEC) had last week directed National Income and Wages Commission to forward the approved Federal Government template to state and local governments on advisory basis as, according to it, the new minimum wage act is a federal law. FEC, presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, had also directed Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, to effect payment of the new minimum wage…
Fresh protests and attacks on businesses erupted in Chile Monday despite President Sebastián Piñera’s replacement of eight key Cabinet ministers with more centrist figures and his attempts to assure the country he has heard calls for greater equality and improved social services. Thousands of protesters crowded again into central Santiago, and one group set fire to a building that houses a fast-food restaurant and stores. Firefighters were battling the blaze. Other looters attacked a pharmacy, and there was an attempt to set a subway station on fire. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people attempted to get home from work on…
Britain got Brexit breathing space but no clarity on Monday when the European Union granted a three-month delay to the U.K.‘s departure from the bloc, postponing it until Jan. 31. British politicians immediately began using the extra time to do what they have done for more than three years: bicker about Brexit. Prime Minister Boris Johnson pushed for an early election as a way of breaking the political deadlock over the country’s stalled departure from the EU, only to be rebuffed by lawmakers. Legislators voted by 299-70 for Johnson’s motion to hold a Dec. 12 election — short of the…
United States on Monday confirmed the killing of Abu al-Hassan al-Muhajir, Islamic State spokesman and a high-ranking figure within the jihadi group, in a separate U.S. operation, according to a senior State Department official. On Sunday, the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia said al-Muhajir was killed in a joint raid between Kurdish-led and U.S. forces in northern Syria. Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Commander Mazloum Abdi said it was “a continuation of the previous operation” in which Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed over the weekend. Mazloum described the jihadist spokesman as Baghdadi’s right-hand man. Muhajir was killed in…
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Iraqi jihadist who rose from obscurity to declare himself “caliph” of all Muslims as the leader of Islamic State, has died in a raid by U.S. special forces in northwest Syria. U.S. President Donald Trump said in a televised address from the White House that Baghdadi killed himself during the raid by igniting a suicide vest. Test results from the aftermath of the raid had positively identified Baghdadi, he said. Baghdadi had long been a target for U.S. and regional security forces trying to eliminate Islamic State, even as they reclaimed most of the territory the…

Nigerian military has planned a nationwide operation to demand identity cards from citizens across the country. ‘Operation Positive Identification’ would see soldiers accosting citizens on the streets or highways and asking them to produce means of identification on the spot. Soldiers had been taking similar measures to separate citizens from terrorists in the Boko Haram-ravaged northeastern part of Nigeria. The military claimed last month that citizens in the North-east had been cooperating with troops to make the exercise successful by carrying with them valid identity documents. But the military announced on September 25 that the exercise will be extended nationwide…
