Queen Elizabeth II, broke tradition by wearing a lighter crown for Monday’s state opening of parliament, instead of the heavier one she had worn for the same event 64 times before. The Imperial State Crown, encrusted with nearly 3,000 diamonds, was placed on a table close to the throne from which she delivered her Queen’s Speech setting out Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s work programme. The 93-year-old monarch wore the lighter Diamond Diadem, also known as the George IV diadem, as she read the speech from a throne, accompanied by her eldest son and heir, Prince Charles, 70. The queen has…
The Latest on the Nobel Prize in economics (all times local): 1 a.m. Tuesday Michael Kremer was worried the Skype message was a scam. It appeared to be from a friend in Sweden and said the person needed to speak with the Harvard economist “urgently.” That’s when Kremer realized he’d been awarded the Nobel Prize in economics on Monday. Kremer was recognized along with Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.” Kremer says he’s watched economics change over the years to a discipline in which researchers engage more with people on the ground. US sanctions Turkey over Syria offensive

The US has sanctioned two Turkish ministries and three senior government officials in response to the country's military offensive in northern Syria. President Donald Trump also phoned his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to demand an immediate truce, Vice-President Mike Pence said. Mr Pence said he would travel to the region "as quickly as possible". Syria's army earlier entered areas in the north-east. This could result in a confrontation with Turkish-led forces. The Syrian army deployment followed a deal with Kurdish-led forces, who until last week were US allies. Turkey says its offensive aims to push Kurdish forces from the…

The statement maintained that the administration of former Governor Abiola…
When President Muhammadu Buhari turned up at the jummat prayer at Presidential Villa Mosque on Friday, a lot of Nigerians were probably eagerly waiting to see him take the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Ms Sadiya Umar Farouq, as his second wife. However, that never happened, which put to rest rumours making the rounds that the President would marry the 44-year-old minister on Friday at Central Mosque, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja at 2pm. This probably explained the presence of many worshippers at the mosque; with the hope of witnessing the ‘wedding.’ Since Wednesday, social media had…

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded Friday to a dynamic young African leader whose sweeping reforms and surprising embrace of a bitter rival have been praised as an inspiration to the continent and a hopeful counterpoint to strongman movements far beyond it. Now the task for Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is reining in the ethnic violence that followed the loosening of repressive controls, and resisting any urge to crack down. “He deserves it and the new challenge is keeping it,” one outspoken African activist, Nigerian Shehu Sani, said of the award. Abiy, a favorite to win despite speculation about…
