Sultan of Sokoto and Chairmen of councils of traditional rulers across the 19 States of northern Nigeria, Sa’ad Abubakar, has met with governors in the region over the continuing violence in Southern Kaduna. Hundreds have been killed in the area since last year in clashes between Fulani herdsmen and locals of the area. National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, said 204 people have been killed. Thirty senior police officers, retired in 2016, have challenged their retirement at the National Industrial Court, Abuja insisting the force was ‘influenced’ to retire them. The officers sought the powers of the court to interpret certain parts of the constitution binding on the Police Service Commission and its retirement processes. The Federal Government said it had so far released over N375 million toward the implementation of its school feeding programme in five states, this year. Mr Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Vice-President, made this known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja. Akande said that the release of the amount was meant to feed almost 700,000 primary school pupils in the five states. Authorities of the Umaru Yar’Ádua University, Katsina, have denied discriminating against Christian students in the approval granted a students religious association to operate on its campus. Acting Dean of Student Affairs of the University, Sulaiman Kankara, had in a January 17 memo informed students of a new guideline for the registration of clubs and associations in the institution.
