Two people were killed as self-defense fighters helped thwart more deadly suicide bombings in Nigeria and Cameroon on Tuesday, officials and witnesses said. In Maiduguri, northeast Nigeria's biggest city and the birthplace of the Boko Haram insurgency, a lone bomber attempted to attack a mosque near the city's university during morning prayers. FG disburses loans to 23,400 persons

The Federal Government has disbursed loans to 23,400 beneficiaries in 13 states and the Federal Capital Territory under its enterprise and empowerment programme. Spokesman to the vice president, Mr Laolu Akande, who disclosed this in a statement yesterday, did not disclose the exact amount disbursed. The loans ranged from N10,000 to N100,000 per applicant and would be paid directly to individuals who were expected to belong to registered associations or co-operatives “to ensure that they are peer-endorsed as credible”. Police in Lagos on Monday said they had arrested publisher of Biafra Times and nine others for allegedly publishing and circulating seditious and malicious publication. Parading the 10 suspects, Lagos State Police Commissioner, Mr Fatai Owoseni, said 515 copies of the offending newspaper were recovered during a raid on the printing press in Shomolu, Lagos. “The printing press has been shut and the environment is being monitored. “This is an offence punishable under the Criminal Law of Lagos State,” Owoseni said. Police yesterday sealed the Ondo State House of Assembly to prevent a fracas between Malachi Coker and Jumoke Akindele factions, laying claim to the speakership. The Coker faction removed Ms. Akindele and other principal officers last Friday for alleged N15million fraud. Justice Jude Okeke of an FCT High Court has given indication that federal government’s charges against embattled justice of the Federal High Court, Adeniyi Ademola may be thrown out tomorrow. The judge in his ruling on an application for an adjournment sought by FG’s counsel ruled that the prosecution did not present any cogent reason for applying for an adjournment but giving it a benefit of doubt the court adjourned trial to continue tomorrow.
