Boko Haram: Northeast Nigeria ‘500 years behind South in Education’ – VC

Vice- Chancellor, University of Maiduguri, Professor Abubakar Njodi, has said the North-east may take 500 years to recover from the destruction inflicted by Boko Haram on its education system and attain the current standard in southern Nigeria. Workers desert federal secretariat over electricity cut

Workers at the Federal Secretariat Complex, Abuja have deserted their offices as the Electricity Distribution Company cut off power supply. On Friday that most of the offices in the complex were closed. The complex which hosts most of the ministries, including Education, Health, Science and Technology, Women Affairs, and Sports had no electricity supply. Nigerian Customs impounds 2 helicopters

Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Friday said it had intercepted two helicopters and 23 consignments of accessories illegally imported into the country. Mr Dan Ugo, a Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs, told newsmen in Lagos that the two helicopters and accessories, valued at N9.7 billion, were impounded at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport. “The consignment was detained at SAHCOL cargo shed. Upon examination, the consignment was found to contain two civil models of Bell Helicopters 412 EP, with serial numbers 36608 and 36606. “The consignment also contains 23 packages of accessories, weighing 11,475kg,” the customs boss said. Oil Spill: Bayelsa sues Agip, demands N1.6 trillion compensation

Bayelsa State Government has dragged Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) Ltd. to a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt over an oil spillage from the company’s SBM Sirius in Brass Local Government Area of the state. The government disclosed this on Friday in an originating summons, filed by the Bayelsa Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Kemeasuode Wodu. The Supreme Court on Friday struck out a suit filed by the Federal Government seeking an order wresting the control and management of its land in Lagos State from the state government. Students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) have resumed for studies after a directive by the university management. The school was closed in June last year as lecturers went on strike to demand payment of their salaries. Nigerian literary icon Buchi Emecheta dies at 72

Nigerian author, Buchi Emecheta, whose works included The Joys of Motherhood, Second-Class Citizen and The Bride Price, has died at her home in London at the age of 72, the BBC reported yesterday.
