Rivers state high court has sentenced Gracious David West to death by hanging for the murder of 11 women. David West was arrested in September 2019 in connection to a series of killings, most of which occurred in Port Harcourt, Rivers capital. The murders, which were said to have started around July 2019, involved young female victims discovered in hotel rooms with white clothes tied around their necks. Mr Dapo Apara, a Nigerian chartered accountant, has accused a former governor of Lagos State, Mr Bola Tinubu; a consulting firm, Alpha-beta, and a former commissioner in the state, Mr Akin Doherty, of money laundering, fraud, tax evasion, and sundry corrupt practices. Apara, in writ of summons deposed to at a Lagos high court, claimed that Tinubu and Alpha-beta reneged on certain agreements reached in the past about the management and control of the consulting firm. Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun questioning Mr Mudashiru Obasa, speaker of Lagos state house of assembly, over corruption allegations against him. EFCC spokesman, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the development on Thursday. “He responded to an invite from the commission this morning,” he said. A light aircraft carrying almost half a tonne of cocaine crashed in central Mexico after a high-speed airborne chase with authorities, and two people aboard died, the defense ministry said on Wednesday. Mexican military helicopters intercepted the plane in Mexican airspace and pursued it for hundreds of miles until it ran out of fuel and crashed in Botija, Queretero on Monday, the ministry said in a statement. Armed robbers have bombarded a branch of WEMA bank, Iyin-Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun local government area of Ekiti. The six-man robbers arrived the town around 3.30pm on Friday and blasted the security doors with explosive devise suspected to be dynamite. Jihadists killed 10 soldiers in an ambush near the town of Marte in Lake Chad region, two security sources said on Wednesday. Fighters from Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) carrying machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades on Tuesday opened fire on a military convoy on a “logistics supply mission”, they said. “The terrorists killed 10 soldiers, including two officers, in the ambush,” one of the sources, told AFP. Africa is losing nearly $89 billion a year in illicit financial flows such as tax evasion and theft, amounting to more than it receives in development aid, a UN study showed on Monday. The estimate, in United Nations Conference on Trade and Development's (UNCTAD) 248-page report, is its most comprehensive to date for Africa.
