All Progressives Congress (APC) says it cannot be compared with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The ruling party said this reaction to comments made by Attahiru Jega, a former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Responding via a statement issued on Monday, John Akpanudoedehe, national secretary of APC caretaker committee, said Jega’s comparison is “baseless”. Akpanudoedehe said his party is cleaning the mess made by the PDP and that it is a focused political unit. “While the PDP failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians as a government and oppositon party, APC is thriving, healthy and assiduously cleaning the…
Kalu Agu, a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC), has asked a federal capital territory (FCT) high court to stop the party from proceeding with its congresses scheduled for Saturday. Agu, who is vying for the position of the national legal adviser in the party’s next national convention said Mai Mala Buni’s position as chairman of the caretaker committee violates Section 183 of the 1999 Constitution which prohibits a governor from holding another executive position. In the suit marked CV/1812/2021, dated July 29, Agu also submitted that the Buni-led committee is also illegal because they were not elected into position…
Supreme Court of Nigeria has dismissed the appeal filed by Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party, challenging the election of Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu. In the majority judgment, four of the justices of the apex court upheld the decision of the Court of Appeal and the Ondo State Governorship Election Petition. The apex court thereby dismissed the appeal for lack of merit. In a dissenting judgment, Mary Odili, Tijjani Abubakar, and Ejembi Eko, held that the appeal should be allowed. Jegede had challenged the emergence of Akeredolu as the winner of the governorship election of October 10, 2020.…
PRESS RELEASE The Pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has stated that it has not abandoned its clamour for the immediate Restructuring of Nigeria contrary to the wrong impression created by a purported Communique being circulated. According to the National Publicity Secretary of the body, Jare Ajayi, it was true that members of the Caucus of Afenifere met at Ogbo Ijebu country home of its acting Leader, Ayo Adebanjo on Tuesday this week. However, at no time in the course of the meeting was a decision taken that could be interpreted as an abandonment of Restructuring. If anything, the meeting re-affirmed…
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum says electronic transmission of election results will guarantee free and fair polls in the country. While the senate passed the electoral act amendment bill to empower Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to determine the electronic transmission of election results, the house of representatives adopted the use of technology “where practicable”. The two chambers of the national assembly are yet to harmonise and hold a common position on the bill. Addressing reporters in Bauchi after the PDP governors met on Monday, Aminu Tambuwal, Sokoto governor, said the electronic transmission of election results must be part of…
All Progressives Congress (APC) has released the approved schedule of activities and guidelines for the conduct of the party’s nationwide ward congresses scheduled for Saturday, July 31, 2021. The party also granted waivers to returning members of the ward executive and new members to contest for any of the 27 ward executive offices and delegates for local government and state congresses. The notice of timeline and activities for the ward congresses released yesterday in Abuja by the party’s Secretary Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), John James Akpanudoedehe, showed that purchase of nomination forms for ward, local government/area councils, and state…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has the capacity to transmit results electronically, despite the poor conditions in remote areas across the country. It would be recalled that National Assembly blocked the transmission of election results through electoral means in clause 50(2) of the electoral act amendment bill. After heated arguments among senators, the bill was finally passed on Thursday at the senate, but with provisions on electronic transmission of results. Majority of the senate voted in favour of allowing Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to certify national coverage, followed by an approval by the national assembly before INEC can…
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has won the country's delayed elections with an overwhelming majority, the election board said on Saturday. The board said Abiy's Prosperity Party won 410 out of 436 seats, giving him another five-year term in office. However, a fifth of the country failed to carry out voting overall due to insecurity and logistical problems. Polls were not held in the war-torn Tigray region, where many thousands are living in famine conditions. Another round of elections has been penned for 6 September in the affected areas, but a date has not been confirmed for Tigray. The election…
