Pan-Northern socio-political organisation, Arewa Consultative Forum, has said it has no objection to a southerner becoming Nigeria’s president in 2023. It, however, said it would not interfere in a matter that had to do with political parties or support a particular zone or candidate for the presidency or any other office. ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Yawe, who made this known to our correspondent, said the impression created that northerners would never support a southerner to become the president of the country was wrong. Yawe said, “ACF has no objection to a southerner becoming the president of Nigeria. In 1999,…

U.S. House impeaches Trump for a second time

Donald Trump on Wednesday became the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice, as 10 of his fellow Republicans joined Democrats in the House of Representatives to charge him with inciting an insurrection in last week’s violent rampage in the Capitol. The vote in the Democratic-controlled House was 232-197 following the deadly assault on American democracy, although it appeared unlikely the swift impeachment would lead to Trump’s ouster before his four-year term ends and Democratic President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated on Jan. 20. The Senate’s Republican majority leader, Mitch McConnell, rejected Democratic calls for a quick impeachment trial,…
Joe Concha The leader of the free world, at least for the next nine days, got banned on Friday night from using his favorite form of communication whenTwitter permanently dismissed him from the platform. The questions are: How did we get here? And where do we go next? First, let's review Twitter's decision to ban Trump in perpetuity. The last straw apparently came Friday afternoon after Trump tweeted that he won't be attending President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration. When told the news, Biden said he was in agreement with Trump. No matter: Twitter explained its decision this way: "President Trump's statement…

Nwosu, seconded by Ben Obi, dissolving the John Nwodo-led executive of the organisation. Thereafter, Gary Igariwey, chairman of the Electoral Committee, said the committee had adopted an open process in the…
There was wild jubilation yesterday in some parts of Edo State as Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja, Saturday, dismissed a suit of forgery against Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki for want of merit. Mohammed dismissed the suit brought by Obaseki’s former party, All Progressives Congress (APC) on the grounds that they failed to prove allegations of forgery against the governor. Obaseki hailed the decision of the court as triumph of truth and rule of law in a statement immediately after the judgment. According to the judge, the plaintiffs’ reliance on photocopies of Obaseki’s credentials in instituting the…
Niger’s ruling party candidate Mohamed Bazoum will face former president Mahamane Ousmane in a presidential election runoff in February, according to provisional results of the first round of the contest announced by the electoral commission on Saturday. Bazoum led the first round with 39.33% of the vote, falling short of the 50% needed to win outright in the first round. Ousmane received 17% of the vote, the commission said. The second round is expected to be held on Feb. 21 after the results of the first round have been validated by the constitutional court which will hear any appeals. Niger’s…
Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has described Nigeria’s presidential system of government as “totally useless,” and expressed its readiness to engage other parts of the country in a debate on Nigeria’s future, saying it was ready for the restructuring of the country. Convener of the Forum, Ango Abdullahi, a retired professor, stated this in a telephone interview with Vanguard. Abdullahi, who expressed the preference of the North for a return to the parliamentary system of government, said the current presidential system had caused more division than uniting the country. Abdullahi said: “Today, we may appear to have a federal system of…
Niger votes in an election on Sunday (today) that is expected to lead to the first transfer of power between two democratically elected presidents in a country reeling from Islamist violence. Former interior minister Mohamed Bazoum, the ruling party’s candidate, is the overwhelming favourite to succeed President Mahamadou Issoufou, who is stepping down after two five-year terms leading the largely desert country of 23 million. Bazoum, 60, has promised continuity with Issoufou’s policies, while also vowing to clean up pervasive corruption. “If I am lucky enough to win this election, you will have chosen someone who is ready from day…
