Pro-independence parties won a majority in Scotland’s parliament on Saturday, paving the way to a high-stakes political, legal and constitutional battle with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson over the future of the United Kingdom. Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the result meant she would push ahead with plans for a second independence referendum once the Covid-19 pandemic was over, adding that it would be absurd and outrageous if Johnson were to try to ignore the democratic will of the people. “There is simply no democratic justification whatsoever for Boris Johnson, or indeed for anyone else, seeking to block the…
Supreme Court on Friday upheld deregistration of 74 political parties by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their inability to win any election after the 2019 general polls. Adamu Jauro, who delivered the judgment of the apex court in a virtual court session on Friday, held that the deregistration of the affected political parties, including National Unity Party (NUP) was in compliance with the extant provisions of the Constitution and Electoral Act. The judgment has to a large extent, sealed the fate of the remaining 73 parties many of whom have their appeals still pending in the Supreme Court and…
Supreme Court on Friday overturned the decision of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State to sack local government chairmen and councillors in the state. The apex court also noted that the replacement of the sacked officials with caretaker committees was illegal and fined Makinde’s administration N20 million. While the court agreed that the tenures of the sacked council chairmen and councillors have expired, it ordered that all their outstanding salaries and allowances must be paid with immediate effect. Few hours after his inauguration as governor in 2019, Makinde sacked the officials who were elected in 2018. He told them to…
A former president, Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday described calls for the disintegration of Nigeria as unmindful and insensitive to the plight of the minority groups in the country. Obasanjo made the observation when he received the Tiv Professional Group (TPG) from Benue State, who paid him a courtesy visit in Abeokuta. The former President recalled a discussion between him and “a military friend” who, according to him, has described major tribes in the country as selfish and not sufficiently caring for the minority groups. Obasanjo, who aligned with his friend’s opinion, expressed worry over what would become of the minority…
Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), Kayode Fayemi, has said there is need for a change of the strategy used in the fight against terrorism. Speaking in Lagos during the 2021 Pre-synod summit organised by the Diocese of Lagos, Anglican Communion, on Saturday, Fayemi described the insecurity in the country as “frightening”. He noted that Nigeria has shown “enormous resilience in confronting the challenges,” adding, “even though the ethno-religious crisis might not have been fully wiped out, the intensity of its occurrence has gone down considerably.” He said efforts of the government to contain the insecurity…
PRESS RELEASE An outsider distilling the avalanche of verbiage, will be surprised that after supporting the President two times to win the Presidency, Father Mbaka has made a complete U-Turn, preposterously asking President Muhammadu Buhari to resign or be impeached. Here is the point of departure: Mbaka asked for a meeting and to the shock of Presidential Aides, he came accompanied by three contractors. The President graciously allowed them in, and to everyone’s surprise, Mbaka asked for contracts as compensation for his support. Anyone familiar with Buhari knows that he doesn’t break the laid down rules in dealing with contracts…

Since we are all motivated towards the same ultimate objective of Yoruba security and development – with only slight differences in strategies and tactics – all people of Yoruba descent must remain united in purpose and continue to rub minds in an environment of mutual love and respect. Raul Castro confirmed he was handing over the leadership of the all-powerful Cuban Communist Party to a younger generation that was “full of passion and anti-imperialist spirit” at its congress that kicked off on Friday. In a speech opening the four day closed door event, excerpts of which were broadcast on state television, Castro, 89, said he had the satisfaction of handing over the leadership to a group of party loyalists that had decades of experience working their way up the ranks. “I believe fervently in the strength and exemplary nature and comprehension of my compatriots, and as long as…
Benin’s President Patrice Talon, who previously vowed to serve only one term, enters Sunday’s election a heavy favourite to win five more years in office amid criticism he has tarnished the country’s reputation as one of West Africa’s model democracies. Talon, a multi-millionaire cotton magnate, faces two challengers, but analysts say he has prevented his strongest rivals from running by driving them into exile under the threat of criminal charges. His U-turn about a second term, which he pledged as a candidate in 2016 to forgo in order to avoid “complacency”, has led to protests in the country of 12…
