Nigeria is gripped by a crisis that has left Africa’s most populous country ill-equipped to properly house its inhabitants, said a United Nations rapporteur who also called for an end to the forced evictions of entire communities. United Nations estimates that Nigeria’s population is set to double by 2050 to around 400 million people, which would make it the world’s third-largest nation, behind India and China. Against this backdrop, there was a lack of adequate housing in a country where most inhabitants live on less than $2 a day despite the nation having Africa’s largest economy, said Leilani Farha, special…
Britain, France and Germany joined the United States on Monday in blaming Iran for attacks on key oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, but the Iranian foreign minister pointed to claims of responsibility by Yemeni rebels and said: “If Iran were behind this attack, nothing would have been left of this refinery.” Fallout from the Sept. 14 attacks is still reverberating as world leaders gather for their annual meeting at the U.N. General Assembly and international experts investigate, at Saudi Arabia’s request, what happened and who was responsible. The leaders of the United Kingdom, France and Germany released a statement reaffirming…
Iran has rejected a joint statement by the leaders of France, Germany and the UK who blamed it for attacks earlier this month on Saudi oil installations. Iran's foreign minister accused them of "parroting absurd US claims". The European leaders said there was no other plausible explanation for the attacks, which shut down half of Saudi Arabia's oil production. But they said they remained committed to the 2015 international deal on Iran's nuclear programme. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi rebels have claimed they carried out the 14 September attacks while Iran itself has denied any involvement. Eighteen drones and seven cruise missiles…
Thousands of students protested at rallies across Indonesia on Monday against a new criminal code that would outlaw sex outside marriage and gay sex, as lawmakers met the president to discuss how to proceed with a bill that has divided Indonesians. President Joko Widodo on Friday ordered a delay in a planned vote on the controversial bill - originally slated for Tuesday - and said 14 articles needed further review before it was deliberated by a new parliament, whose term begins next month. Students rallied on Monday in the capital Jakarta - where some climbed the gates of the parliament…
Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami; Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, and Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, on Saturday led a delegation to the United Kingdom for a fresh legal battle with a British firm, Process and Industrial Developments Ltd on Thursday. Other government officials that were part of the trip included Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, and acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Ibrahim Magu. A British commercial court had in August affirmed the ruling of a London arbitration tribunal, which, in January 2017, awarded $6.6bn…
Nigeria will require anyone moving through three northeastern states to carry identification cards in an effort to root out members of Boko Haram and Islamic State, the army said on Sunday. The new requirement follows credible information that members of the two militant groups were hiding among civilians in the towns and villages of the states, an army statement said. The army said it would “strictly check” the identification cards of those moving or passing through the states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. Those found without identification would “attract further scrutiny and comprehensive investigation to determine his or her activities…
Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria sometimes (MACBAN) has rejected the proposed amnesty for killer herdsmen, cattle rustlers, and bandits. Bauchi State secretary of the association, Mr Sadiq Ahmad, said the move would only attract more criminals. “Government should allow the law to take its full course. Let them serve their jail terms – even if it is a life sentence – They are bad eggs.” He spoke during a chat with reporters after a stakeholders’ meeting with the state commissioner of police, Mr Habu Sani, yesterday in Bauchi. Nobel laureate, Mr Wole Soyinka, has sternly rebuked the Buhari administration after it filed charges of treason against the detained publisher of Sahara Reporters, Mr Omoyele Sowore. Soyinka said the government “has indeed attained an unprecedented level of paranoia” over the “improbable” charges that include “insulting” President Muhammadu Buhari. Charges against the activist became public on Friday, more than a month after Sowore was detained by the State Security Service for planning the #RevolutionNow protest. SSS obtained a court order authorising Sowore be held for 45 days in the first instance. Last week, security forces laid a siege to the…
Women who take paracetamol while pregnant risk having children with behaviour problems, a study suggests. Scientists found a link between expectant mothers using the painkiller and their youngsters being hyperactive and having emotional issues. Paracetamol is the world's most popular painkiller and is the only one deemed safe to take during pregnancy. But a growing body of research suggests it could damage the development of children in the womb, with studies linking it with asthma, infertility and autism. In the latest research, carried out by the University of Bristol, scientists examined data from 14,000 children between the ages of six…
