DSS quizzes Gumi over utterances

Ahmad Gumi, popular Islamic cleric, has been invited by Department of State Services (DSS) in Kaduna. Gumi was invited on Friday over his allegation that Nigerian security agencies are benefitting from the banditry ravaging communities in the north. Although he has denied being invited, it was confirmed from the DSS that he was indeed invited and he honoured the invitation. It was gathered that the cleric was cautioned on his utterances but was not arrested contrary to reports. The cleric, who is known to have access to bandits, made the allegation on Wednesday during a programme on Arise TV. He…

President Muhammadu Buhari will proceed to London, the United Kingdom, today (Friday) for a scheduled medical follow-up. Femi Adesina, the President’s spokesman, confirmed this in a statement in Abuja on Thursday. “He is due back in the country during the second week of July, 2021,’’ the presidential aide stated. The president returned from his previous medical trip to London in April. He had travelled on March 30 and returned to the country two weeks later. Before the April trip, Buhari had gone to London for medical checkup in May 2018. NAN
Northeast Nigeria’s conflict with Islamist insurgencies had killed nearly 350,000 people as of the end of 2020, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said on Thursday. The toll, given by the U.N. agency in a new study on the war and its impact on livelihoods, is 10 times higher than previous estimates of about 35,000 based only on those killed in fighting in Nigeria since the conflict’s start 12 years ago. “The full human cost of the war is much greater,” the UNDP said in a report, released with Nigeria’s Ministry of Finance. “Already, many more have died from the…
An Italian appeals court on Thursday overturned jail sentences handed down to Nigerian Emeka Obi and Italian Gianluca Di Nardo for their part in a graft case involving Eni and Shell in Nigeria. In a decision taken behind closed doors but read out to reporters afterwards, the three judges quashed the convictions and said there was no case to answer. The prosecution itself had asked for the sentences to be overturned after a court in March acquitted the two energy groups in a long-running case revolving around the acquisition of a Nigerian oilfield for about $1.3 billion. The judges dismissed…
Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) on Wednesday said it shared a total of N605.958 billion as May 2021 revenue to the Federal, States and Local Governments as well as other relevant agencies. Charles Nwodo, Director, Information, Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, in a statement in Abuja, said the amount was shared during a virtual conference of the committee. The committee, in a communique, noted that the N605.958 billion shared included cost of collection to Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). The committee also stated that Federal Government received N242.120…
President Muhammadu Buhari and some Northern governors met yesterday at the State House, Abuja over the deteriorating security situation in the country. The meeting was said to have primarily centred on the security situation in the 19 Northern states. Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, told journalists after the meeting that peace and confidence seemed to be gradually returning to the region with the new security roadmap adopted by the federal and state governments to secure the region. He assured farmers that they would soon be able to safely cultivate their farms during raining season as security would continue to be…
Nigerian Army has described as “sad and unfortunate” comments made by a renowned Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, that security personnel are colluding with bandits. When he appeared on ARISE TV on Wednesday, Gumi accused some security personnel of giving armed gangs wreaking havoc across the country a soft landing. He said gunmen would not have had access to weapons without the support of some security personnel. But reacting to the allegation, Army spokesman, Onyema Nwachukwu, described it as a calculated attempt to denigrate the Nigerian military and undermine the sacrifices of the troops. Nwachukwu called on the opinion leaders to…
It started off as a local tabloid with a reputation for sensational headlines and paparazzi photographs. But over its 26 years in print, Hong Kong's Apple Daily became something rarer - a newspaper unafraid to be openly critical of the Chinese state and a standard bearer for the pro-democracy movement. Its role as one of Hong Kong's most vocal defenders won fans, but also contributed to its eventual demise. Last year, its outspoken founder Jimmy Lai was arrested and jailed under a string of charges just months after the imposition of a new national security law. And last week, the…
Japan’s top court on Wednesday threw out a challenge by three couples who wanted to keep their own surnames after marriage, ruling that laws stipulating Japanese couples must choose one family name were constitutional, media reported. The couples had argued that the provisions were discriminatory, pointing to growing public support for allowing married people to use different surnames. Debate about allowing couples to use different surnames has become a hot topic among politicians after Yoshihide Suga replaced Shinzo Abe, who is thought to have more conservative views on the issue, as prime minister last year. While some lawmakers in the…
