Israel says it has launched air strikes against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, in retaliation for incendiary balloons fired from the territory. Explosions were heard in Gaza City in the early hours of Wednesday. Several balloons were sent from Gaza into Israel earlier on Tuesday causing multiple fires, according to the Israeli fire service. It is the first major flare-up since 11 days of fighting between the two sides ended in a ceasefire on 21 May. It followed a march by Jewish nationalists in occupied East Jerusalem on Tuesday, which had drawn threats from Hamas, the militant group that…
Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, yesterday stated that Nigeria cannot remain one country if it fails to decentralise as fast as possible, adding that analysts, retired generals and others have maintained the same position. Soyinka spoke to ARISE NEWS Channel, urging President Muhammadu Buhari to be more sensitive to the agitations of secessionists rather than bully them. “If it (Nigeria) fails to decentralise, some people use the word restructuring, some use whatever. But if Nigeria fails to decentralise as fast as possible, manifestly, not as rhetoric, then Nigeria cannot stay together,” he warned, adding: “Again, it’s not Wole Soyinka saying this.…

Years after their disbandment, the Bakassi Boys, a vigilante group in the Southeast, have returned to some parts of Awka, Anambra State capital. However, it could not be confirmed who invited the dreaded vigilante group. When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ikenga Tochukwu, said he was not aware of the development. Almost one third of people in the UK who have so far died from the Indian variant had received both their vaccinations. Just weeks before England aimed to scrap coronavirus regulations for good, the variant – now officially named ‘Delta’ – has caused cases to soar, sparking fears of another wave of the disease. But infection numbers are not necessarily what will delay ‘Freedom Day’ on June 21, as scientists will analyse the number of people being hospitalised and dying from the virus. A new report from Public Health England (PHE) shows out of the 42 British people known to…
Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) says tax defaulters instituting legal cases against the agency will pay 50 percent of the assessed amount in dispute into an interest-yielding account of the federal high court before hearing. Muhammad Nami, executive chairman of FIRS, disclosed this on Friday during a public hearing organised by the house of representatives committee on public accounts investigating revenue leakages arising from tax waivers and incentives to foreign companies granted pioneer status. He said the new rule is contained in a recent practice direction issued by John Terhemba Tsoho, chief judge of the federal high court, Abuja, under…
Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state has questioned the workability of a return to open grazing, practised during the First Republic as directed by President Muhammad Buhari. Akeredolu, while addressing the audience at a June 12 Memorial Lecture in Akure, Saturday, said things had changed and creating cattle routes could dislocate already established developments. While fielding questions from Arise TV journalists on Thursday, the president said he had asked the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to begin the process of recovering land from persons who had converted cattle grazing routes for their personal use. The implication of the…
Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has come hard on President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his Democracy Day speech and recent interviews as falling short of what was expected of him as leader of a country. This is just as it said his administration is bent on taking steps not in the best interests of majority of Nigerians. The organization in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, expressed disappointment with the disclosure by the President that he had directed Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation to ‘re-open’ the grazing routes throughout the country. It said, “We…
