Former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, on Wednesday, celebrated a court judgment which trivialised her failure to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme prior her appointment in 2015. In a statement, the former minister described the judgment as vindicating her “after a very traumatic spell”, although she was silent on the forgery of the NYSC exemption certificate she was caught to have committed to be appointed minister in 2015. The judgement, too, was silent on the forgery scandal. This is because the minister who instituted the suit apparently to obtain a judicial clearance did not present it…
A former military governor of Kaduna State, Dangiwa Umar, a retired army colonel, has blasted the federal government over the security situation in the country, saying it is strange that the government is according undue attention to threats by separatist movements despite the more daunting security issues posed by bandits, kidnappers and insurgents in the North. In a statement issued yesterday in Kaduna, Umar asked the federal government to go beyond the arrest of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, and pay greater attention to the more serious security challenges threatening to cripple the country. According…
Youth from different states in the Southwest geo-political zone, yesterday, stormed Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, in protest against the raid carried out by the Department of State Security (DSS) and other security agencies on the residence of a Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho. The youth said the protest was sparked by the statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari and issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, where he commended the security agencies for arresting the leader of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, and last week’s raid of…
Haiti’s security forces were locked in a fierce gun battle on Wednesday with assailants who assassinated President Jovenel Moise at his home overnight, plunging the already impoverished, violence-wracked nation deeper into chaos. The police had killed four of the “mercenaries” and captured two more, Police General Director Leon Charles said in televised comments late on Wednesday, adding that security forces would not rest until they had all been dealt with. “We blocked them en route as they left the scene of the crime,” he said. “Since then, we have been battling with them.” “They will be killed or apprehended.” Moise,…
Former President Donald Trump announced Wednesday he is filing suits against three of the country’s biggest tech companies: Facebook, Twitter and Google, as well as their CEOs. Trump said he was serving as lead plaintiff in the class-action suits, claiming he has been wrongfully censored by the companies. “We’re demanding an end to the shadow-banning, a stop to the silencing and a stop to the blacklisting, banishing and canceling that you know so well,” Trump said at a news conference at his Bedminster, New Jersey golf course. The suits were filed in U.S. District Court for Florida’s southern district. Trump…
President Muhammadu Buhari has applauded the collaboration between security agencies on the operations against separationists, Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho. Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, in a statement, said the operations were done with great synchronisation leading to the arrests of individuals who had inflicted pain and hardships on fellow citizens. He said Kanu and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leaders were known for murderous actions and virulent messaging. “There have been at last count 50 separate violent attacks, heavily concentrated in the South-East, which heaped further hardship on our honest and hardworking citizens, preventing them from earning their livelihood…
The United Kingdom parliament says it will discuss issues surrounding the repatriation of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu, who is also a British citizen, was arrested penultimate Sunday and extradited to Nigeria to face trial for alleged treason. Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), said last week Tuesday that the IPOB leader was “intercepted through the collaborative efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services”. Malami did not state where the separatist leader was arrested, but it learnt that Kanu, who is based in the UK, was lured to an African country with a promise…
Coalition of Northern Groups on Tuesday responded to the issues raised by Southern Governors Forum during their Monday meeting in Lagos. The coalition accused the southern governors of shielding “felons, arsonists and mass atrocity perpetrators in their midst by challenging the prerogative of the Federal Government to enforce law and order in all parts of the country.” Spokesperson for CNG, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, in a statement said there had been a gang-up against the North in particular, to force a regional shift of the Presidency in 2023 by whatever means and tactics. According to him, the insistence by the southern governors…
House of Representatives has passed for second reading, a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to allow creation of state police and legalise regional security outfits. The current police system will be decentralised by moving police from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent List. Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Onofiok Luke, who sponsored the bill, said in the explanatory note that the bill seeks to alter the Constitution “to provide for state police and other state government security services to enhance security and preservation of lives and properties in Nigeria”. The bill especially proposes an amendment…
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday urged political parties worldwide to oppose any country that engages in “technology blockades”, an allusion to the United States which views China as its strategic competitor. As U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration has sought support from like-minded democracies including the European Union and Japan to coordinate a tougher stance against China, Beijing has doubled down on seeking support and affirmation from friendly nations such as North Korea and Serbia. “Together, we must oppose all acts of unilateralism in the name of multilateralism, hegemony and power politics,” Xi told a virtual gathering of representatives of…
