Residents of Ibadan, yesterday, staged a peaceful protest against irregular power supply by Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). The residents accused the electricity distribution company of exploitation. The protest, which started at Eleta Community High School, saw no fewer than 40 communities participating in it. Some of the protesters from Ibadan South East Local Council condemned mass disconnection from the source of electricity supply and equally sensitised the residents against what they called injustice. The protest attracted representatives of Coalition of Affordable and Regular Electricity (CARE), Abiodun Bamigboye and Olaniyi Abdulwasiu, among others. Abdulwasiu alleged that the IBEDC had disregarded…
Resident doctors under the umbrella of National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) have unanimously agreed to withdraw their services nationwide, effective Monday, August 2. This, they said, was as a result of poor working conditions, owed salaries and other entitlements, as well as several other issues bordering on their welfare. The resident doctors’ body, which said that the nationwide strike would be total, has directed all its chapters across the country to ensure that members comply with the directive. NARD President, Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, in a statement confirmed that the decision on nationwide strike was taken at the National Executive Council…
The Texas doctor who became famous in 2020 for promoting the use of Hydroxychloroquine [HQC], an anti-malarial drug, as "a cure" for Covid-19 has filed a defamation lawsuit against CNN and CNN anchor, Anderson Cooper in the amount of $100 million. Stella Immanuel filed a federal lawsuit on Tuesday claiming that, "in an effort to vilify, demonize and embarrass President [Donald] Trump, Cooper and CNN published a series of statements of fact about Immanuel that injured her reputation and exposed her to public hatred, contempt, ridicule, and financial injury." In the suit, Immanuel says Cooper and CNN "effectively caused the…
A US Court document has detailed conversations between Nigeria's celebrated Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, and infamous suspected fraudster, Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, alias Hushpuppi regarding bribery and arrest of another suspected fraudster. Hushpuppi, who recently pleaded guilty in the United States, had narrated how he bribed Kyari. Officials said in court filings that Hushpuppi disclosed during interrogation that he paid bribes to Nigeria’s police chief, Kyari, to have one of his rivals arrested and jailed in Nigeria following a dispute over a $1.1 million dupe of a Qatari businessperson. Abbas had asked Kyari to arrest and jail a fellow…
The family of Nnamdi Kanu, a secessionist leader and British citizen who is detained in Nigeria, has accused Britain of failing to provide him with consular assistance, the family’s London lawyers said on Thursday. Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group that campaigns for part of southeastern Nigeria to secede, was brought back to Nigeria in June after years on the run abroad and is being held pending a treason trial. Bindmans, a London law firm, said it had sent a pre-action letter to British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab on behalf of Kanu’s family, challenging Britain’s failure…
A top German court has ruled that Facebook acted illegally in taking down racist posts and blocking the account of their author because the social network failed to inform the user or give a reason for shutting them down. Thursday’s judgment by the Federal Court of Justice further complicates a fraught debate over toxic discourse on social networks as Germany girds for a general election in September that polls show may not deliver a stable government. It is all the more striking because the comments made by the unnamed plaintiff evidently violated Facebook’s community standards governing so-called hate speech, which…
Some United States lawmakers have stopped a proposed sale of $875 million worth of arms to Nigeria over concerns about the Nigerian government’s human rights record. According to Foreign Policy, top Democrat and Republican on the Senate foreign relations committee have delayed clearing a proposed sale of 12 AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters and accompanying defence systems to the Nigerian military — the development is coming at a time when the nation is grappling with several security challenges. The report noted that the proposed arms sale included 28 helicopter engines produced by GE Aviation, 14 military-grade aircraft navigation systems made by…
