Prison scam: Head of Kirikiri jail arrested after $1m fraud

Head of a maximum-security jail and a prison doctor have been arrested in Lagos, following allegations that they enabled a prisoner to conduct internet scams. Hope Olusegun Aroke carried out a million-dollar fraud while serving a 24-year jail sentence - for fraud. He had access to a mobile phone and the internet. Air Peace boss Onyema wanted in Canada for fraud in U.S

Canadian authorities have commenced efforts to execute a corresponding arrest warrant issued for a Nigerian businessman accused of fraud in the United States. Mr Allen Onyema, chairman of Air Peace Limited in Nigeria, is facing multiple charges of money laundering and bank fraud in excess of $20 million. A United States grand jury recently indicted Mr Onyema and Ejiroghene Eghagha, Air Peace’s head of finance and administration. ‘Allen Onyema’s status as a wealthy businessman turned out to be a fraud,’ US govt says in fraud indictment of Nigeria’s Air Peace boss

Mr Allen Onyema, chairman, CEO, and founder of Air Peace, a Nigerian airline, has been charged with bank fraud and money laundering for moving more than $20 million from Nigeria through United States bank accounts in a scheme involving false documents based on the purchase of airplanes. A convicted internet fraudster has been placed under investigation in Nigeria for allegedly masterminding a "mega scam" from a maximum-security prison worth at least $1m (N360 million). Anti-corruption officials said Hope Olusegun Aroke used a "network of accomplices" for the fraud. Gunmen killed 14 persons in an attack on Karaye village in Gwalli district in Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. Management of National Examinations Council (NECO) has approved dismissal of 70 staff from service for certificate forgery. Man locks up sister in solitary confinement for 2 years in Kaduna

EFCC, ICPC lose powers to seize assets in corruption cases

A government gazette just published has stripped Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices And Other Related Offences Commission(ICPC) of the powers to seize assets of people being investigated. According to the gazette, Vol. 106, No 163, entitled, “Asset Tracing, Recovery and Management Regulation 2019’’, dated Oct. 29, 2019 such powers have now been transferred to Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF). Herdsmen occupy farmlands in Jigawa, attack police rescue team

A group of armed herdsmen injured an officer during an attack on a police convoy in Kirikassamma local government area of Jigawa State. 259 inmates rescued in police raid on ‘Islamic’ torture centre in Ibadan

Police officers from Oyo State Police Command on Monday raided an Islamic school located at Ojoo area of Ibadan, the state capital and freed 259 ‘students’ who were being maltreated, an official has said.
