Mr Muhammed Idris on Thursday sentenced a former Abia State governor, Mr Orji Kalu, to 12 years in prison for stealing public funds while in office. Kalu, a serving senator, was jailed alongside Mr Udeh Udeogu, his Director of Finance and Accounts at Abia State Government House during Kalu’s tenure. Udeogu was sentenced to 10 years in prison. A third defendant, Kalu’s company, Slok Nigeria Limited, was ordered to be wound up and its assets forfeited to government. Kalu’s prosecution started 12 years ago, in 2007 after he left office as governor. The defendants were eventually faced with an amended…
Former Abia State Governor, Mr Orji Uzor Kalu, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for fraud, was heard asking prison warders, “Where are you taking us to?” after his sentencing. Kalu, who is Senate Chief Whip, also begged prison warders not to handcuff him in public. As Kalu and his co-defendants were being removed from the dock by prison officials, they attempted to handcuff him. The former governor, who appeared shaken, said, “Where are you taking us to now? Please, don’t handcuff me. I will follow you.” Two unidentified women were also seen weeping as Kalu was being…

Mr Muhammed Idris convicted Mr Kalu on 39 counts of N7.2 billion fraud and money laundering preferred against him by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Aba is the main base of Kalu – now a senator – and some of the residents said that the judgment was a warning to political office holders to be careful. A lawyer and social critic, Mr Ukpai Ukairo, said: “The judgment is momentous and shows that you can run…

Seven other crew members remain on board the vessel. Neither the vessel nor the cargo were damaged, the official said. The shipping industry has warned in recent months about the increasing dangers faced by seafarers in the…

Mr Rilwan Aikawa has ordered the temporary forfeiture of Saraki’s two properties designated as Plots No. 10 and No. 11 Abdulkadir Road, GRA, Ilorin, Kwara State. Mr Olamide Sadiq, who is an operative of EFCC, said in an affidavit filed in support of the ex parte application that the move for the forfeiture of the houses followed the findings of EFCC after investigation and “the report of a committee set up to review sales of Kwara State Government during the reign of the Governor of Kwara State in the year 2003 and 2011.” He said EFCC also received “a damning…
Commander, Intelligence Response Team, Mr Abba Kyari, has called for the deployment of intelligence and acquisition of sophisticated technology against kidnappers, noting that the criminals were deploying several means to evade arrest. The DCP stated that kidnappers are now using encrypted communication for ransom negotiations including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, roam numbers and jammers to prevent tracking of their phones by law enforcement agencies. Speaking at 2019 annual general meeting of American Society for Industrial Security International, Chapter 273, Abuja, on Sunday, Kyari stated that this had made it increasingly difficult to track kidnappers, hence the need for acquisition of further…
Towards the end of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, was appointed Commissioner for Trade and Investment by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Commonwealth of Dominica and was handed a diplomatic passport. This, perhaps, is why Diezani has been able to evade prosecution despite being in London for over four years. According to Qatar-based network, Al Jazeera, the former minister may have purchased a $2.2m choice property near the United Nations in upscale Manhattan, New York, for the Dominican Prime Minister in order to obtain the passport. In a documentary titled, ‘Diplomats for…
