Nigeria not ripe for state police - IGP

Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, says Nigeria does not yet have the political maturity for state police. SSS warns ICPC, others against using name for ‘illegal’ operations

State Security Service, SSS, has warned Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission, ICPC, and other security agencies to desist from using its name in “illegal security operations”. SSS in a statement on Thursday signed by its spokesperson, Tony Opuiyo, said the agency noted with “dismay and total condemnation” activities of security agency masquerading as its operatives when engaged in illegal operations. “These impersonators, in some instances, try to mimic the Service’s operational tactics by using its symbols and paraphernalia especially operational dress codes,” the statement reads. FG bows to pressure, separates CRK, IRK in curriculum

Minister of Education, Mr Adamu Adamu, has instructed Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council to make the Christian Religious Knowledge and the Islamic Religious Knowledge distinctive subjects in the basic education curriculum. Court of Appeal frees ex-Adamawa governor of corruption charges

Yola Division of the Court of Appeal on Thursday overturned the conviction of a former governor of Adamawa, Mr Bala Ngilari, and discharged and acquitted him of corruption charges. The court, presided by Justice Olayomi Folashade, quashed all charges against Ngilari for lack of merit and sufficient proof of allegations against him. On March 6, a Yola High Court sentenced Ngilari to five years in prison without the option of fine on charges of financial fraud. Son of Cecil the lion killed in Zimbabwean hunt

Conservationists in Zimbabwe say the son of a lion named Cecil, whose 2015 killing prompted an international outcry, has also been fatally shot during a hunt. A group named Friends of Hwange Trust said Thursday on Facebook that 6-year-old Xanda, Cecil's son, was shot on a "legal trophy hunt" several days ago. Death toll rises to 17 in Kwara cholera outbreak

Seventeen persons have been confirmed dead in 1,617 reported suspected cases as a cholera outbreak continues to ravage Kwara State. Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, disclosed the grim figures in its weekly epidemiological report for Week 26 released on Tuesday. According to the agency, the suspected cases were reported as at the end July 9 with 13 laboratory samples confirming the disease and a case fatality rate of 1.1 percent recorded. Nigeria’s debt increased by 38 percent in 2016 - DMO

Nigeria total debt rose by N4.76tn or 37.74 percent in 2016, the Debt Management Office has disclosed. The DMO disclosed this in its 2016 Annual Report and Statement of Accounts obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday. According to the office, Nigeria’s debt as of December 2016 stood at N17.36tn, up from N12.6tn a year earlier. This reflects an increase of N4.76tn or 37.74 per cent within a period of one year.
