NNPC Ambush: Army apologises for false claims

Nigeria Army on Saturday said it regretted issuing out false statement about last week’s ambush attack on a crew of scientists carrying out geological survey for Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC. Last week, a group of geologists from University of Maiduguri as well as their aides who were subcontracted by NNPC to engage in oil exploration in Lake Chad region were ambushed and abducted by Boko Haram gunmen. Russia's Putin orders 755 US diplomatic staff to leave

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that 755 staff must leave US diplomatic missions, in retaliation for new US sanctions against Moscow. The decision to expel staff was made on Friday, but Mr Putin has now confirmed the number who must go by 1 September. It brings staff levels to 455, the same as Russia's complement in Washington. This is thought to be the largest expulsion of diplomats from any country in modern history, says the BBC's Laura Bicker in Washington. To pass the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill, senators received kickbacks in form of job slots and cash reward from promoters of the proposed paramilitary organisation. As the airlift of Muslim pilgrims to Saudi Arabia commences today, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has assured that airport facilities are ready for the 2017 Hajj operations. Death toll in Boko Haram attack on oil workers, soldiers rises to 48

Hospital officials say the death toll from an ambush in northeastern Nigeria has risen to 48 people. The officials say the bodies of 18 soldiers and 30 others have been brought to Maiduguri from the area near Lake Chad where extremists Boko Haram fighters attacked geological surveyors who were prospecting for oil Tuesday.
