President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, urged Nigerians to be patient with him as his administration made efforts to tackle ongoing killings in parts of the country. He said members of his security teams were racking their brains to come up with a lasting solution. A statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, quoted the President as saying this while condemning killings of many people, including a district head, in and around Gandi village in Rabah Local Government of Sokoto State by bandits. “I wish to assure all Nigerians that their security is receiving the…
Under fire for his warm embrace of Russia's Vladimir Putin, President Donald Trump jolted NATO summit Wednesday by turning a spotlight on Germany's ties to Russia and openly questioning the value of the military alliance that has defined American foreign policy for decades. Trump declared that a joint natural gas pipeline venture with Moscow has left Angela Merkel's government "totally controlled" and "captive to Russia." So, in a stroke, he shifted attention away from his own ties to the Kremlin just days before he meets one-on-one with Putin. With scorching language, the president questioned the necessity of the alliance that…

A former Head of State, Mr Yakubu Gowon, says it is unfair to blame President Muhammadu Buhari for the incessant killings in the conflict between farmers and herders in some parts of Nigeria. Gowon, Nigeria’s military ruler between 1966 and 1974, said he believed the president had no hand in the killings. “The Buhari I know will not be involved in such things. Certainly, no leader will encourage his people to be killed.” He spoke on Tuesday at Plateau State Government House when he paid a condolence visit to Governor Simon Lalong over the resurgence of violence in the state.…
Governor of Sokoto State, Mr Aminu Tambuwal, says killings of policemen by criminals have strengthened the argument that the nation’s security architecture needed to be overhauled. The governor described as worrisome a situation where policemen, who had the constitutional duty of protecting citizens, were themselves being killed by criminals. According to him, the pervading insecurity in the country is blamable on failed leadership. In a statement personally signed by him on Tuesday, Tambuwal recalled that only last week seven policemen were gunned down in Abuja with their arms taken away by the assailants. This, he noted, came only weeks after…

He, however, did not specify the exact date the bridge would be closed to traffic or how long the repairs would last. Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun has maintained a studied silence more than 48 hours after she was accused of forging her National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) exemption certificate. This is even as NYSC vowed to investigate the origin of the “purported exemption certificate” in question. An online newspaper Premium Times had at the weekend reported that the minister forged an exemption certificate after failing to do the one-year national service, which is mandatory for graduates below 30 years at the time of graduation. Breaking its silence on the matter yesterday, management of NYSC issued a terse statement saying that based…

President Donald Trump chose Brett Kavanaugh, a solidly conservative, politically connected judge, for the Supreme Court Monday night, setting up a ferocious confirmation battle with Democrats as he seeks to shift the nation's highest court ever further to the right. A favorite of the Republican legal establishment in Washington, Kavanaugh, 53, is a former law clerk for retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. Like Trump's first nominee last year, Justice Neil Gorsuch, Kavanaugh would be a young addition who could help remake the court for decades to come with rulings that could restrict abortion, expand gun rights and roll back key parts…
