National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has launched a-one-in-all platform for the public called “NAPTIP ireport App.” The application was launched during a press conference Monday in Abuja. According to Director General of NAPTIP, Mrs Julie Okah-Donli, the app is to “scale up the visibility of the agency”. Okah-Donli said the development is to prompt reportage of issues relating to human trafficking as well as increase participation and interaction of the general public in human trafficking matters. With this, “NAPTIP is just a click from you,” she added. Celebrating 2018 World Day Against Human Trafficking and…
Nigeria will deploy its air force and 1,000 security personnel to fight banditry in the northwest of the country, President Muhammadu Buhari said on Sunday. The move underscores how security has broken down across much of Nigeria, where an ineffective police force has exacerbated already-weak enforcement, particularly outside urban areas. The military is now deployed in more than 30 of the 36 states. Nigeria is tackling a nine-year conflict with Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa in the northeast. There is also a conflict across much of its hinterland between farmers and herders that is now more deadly than…
There is confusion in Bayelsa State over deployment of four Commissioners of Police in the state within two weeks by Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris. It was learnt that police authorities were influenced to redeploy the CPs by some politicians not uncomfortable with officers posted to the state. Investigations showed that two weeks after police authorities redeployed the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Don Awunah, to Force Headquarters, Abuja, he was replaced with Mr Joseph Mukan. But barely 48 hours later, Mukan was removed and replaced with Mr Ahmed Bello. Bello was said to be preparing to take over…
Niger Delta leaders under the umbrella of Pan Niger Delta Elders Forum (PANDEF), has expressed disappointment over inability of President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government to implement demands of the people of the region presented to it. It said that apart from initiatives aimed at promoting development in the region, PANDEF would like the federal government to take immediate steps to restructure the country to ensure justice and equity. In a statement issued yesterday by National Publicity Secretary of PANDEF, Mr Anabs Sara-Igbe, the group asked the federal government to implement the 16-point agenda it submitted to President Buhari on November…
Niger Delta communities, under the aegis of host communities of Nigerian producing oil and gas, have called on the federal government to set aside 10 percent of the federation account for their development. They want oil companies operating in the region to concede 10 percent equity participation share to host communities. Chairman of the body, Mr Style Benjamin, stated this at the weekend in Warri, Delta State, during the inauguration of its executive body. He said: “Host communities should be directly involved in the management of their resources to give them sense of belonging. Oil is regarded as national asset…
Nigeria is yet to register half of its 95,000 hajj slots, more than a week since commencement of airlift of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the annual exercise. This is despite reduction in cost of a hajj seat to an average of N1.4m this year as against N1.5m in 2017. Hajj is mandatory at least once for Muslims who are fit physically and financially to perform it. Checks showed most states have filled only about half of their allocated quotas as at Wednesday, July 25, deadline for registration set by National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). For 2018 Hajj, NAHCON…
Funmi Olaitan, Ibadan Founder of One Love Family, Mr Satguru Maharaj Ji, has thrown his weight behind call for the restructuring of the country, calling on President Muhammadu Buhari, to as a matter of urgency declare his support for the creation of state police so as to save the country from the needless killings of innocent Nigerians. He made the call while addressing journalists in a state of the nation address, held at the One Love Family Village, Ibadan. It would be recalled that Mr Buhari had consistently opposed the restructuring of the country and calls for state police, insisting…
Skywatchers around the world have witnessed the longest "blood moon" eclipse of the 21st Century. As it rose, during this total eclipse, Earth's natural satellite turned a striking shade of red or ruddy brown. The "totality" period, where light from the Moon was totally obscured, lasted for one hour, 43 minutes. At least part of the eclipse was visible from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, most of Asia and South America. In the UK, where the weather allowed, the Moon could be seen to turn red - fully eclipsed by Earth - from when it rose at 21:00 until…
President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his administration would look into the constitutional 13 per cent derivation benefit to Niger Delta region to ensure even spread of development projects across the region. Mr Buhari gave the assurance when he received traditional rulers and some other eminent personalities from Isoko, Delta, led by Ovrawah, Omogha 1, Odiologbo of Oleh, at Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday. Buhari assured them that the constitutional provisions for Niger Delta development would be carefully studied for inclusiveness, especially in the prioritisation of Federal Government projects. He said: “I have listened attentively to your address; I will…
Nigerian army has named its fourth commander in 14 months to lead the fight against the Islamist Boko Haram insurgency, a move sources say comes after a series of embarrassing military defeats. The reverses could hurt President Muhammadu Buhari's chances of re-election in Feb. 2019. He campaigned in 2015 vowing to end the insurgency but the war is entering its 10th year and the humanitarian crisis it has spawned show little sign of ending. The appointment of Mr A.M. Dikko, a major-general, is "aimed at injecting new hands to further actualise the vision of Chief of Army Staff, Mr Tukur…
