Nigeria’s electricity grid, operated from Osogbo, Osun State, again collapsed yesterday afternoon, leaving the entire nation in darkness. Managed by Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), sources at the firm confirmed the development to reporters as some distribution companies (DisCos) had already notified consumers of the total blackout. While the grid experienced collapsed in May this year due to industrial unrest, it earlier gave way in April, questioning the integrity of the infrastructure. Though TCN is yet to advance reasons for the latest incident, the network recorded over 11 failures last year. Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), umbrella body of…
Throughout January, the World Health Organization publicly praised China for what it called a speedy response to the new coronavirus. It repeatedly thanked the Chinese government for sharing the genetic map of the virus “immediately,” and said its work and commitment to transparency were “very impressive, and beyond words.” But behind the scenes, it was a much different story, one of significant delays by China and considerable frustration among WHO officials over not getting the information they needed to fight the spread of the deadly virus, The Associated Press has found. Despite the plaudits, China in fact sat on releasing…

Mr Boss Mustapha, chairman of Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, also said a lockdown in the northern city of Kano would be eased, one of a number of changes over four weeks from Tuesday. “Nigeria has not reached the peak of confirmed cases,” Mustapha told reporters. Another official said the aviation…
George Floyd’s brother pleaded for peace in the streets Monday, saying destruction is “not going to bring my brother back at all.” Terrence Floyd’s emotional plea came as the United States braced for another night of violence in response to Floyd’s killing a week ago. Chants of “What’s his name? George Floyd!” filled the air as a large crowd gathered at the spot where the black man who became the latest symbol of racial injustice in America lay handcuffed and dying as a white police officer pressed his knee into his neck. Wearing a face mask with Floyd’s image on…
As Nigeria prepares to end the second phase of the eased lockdown on Monday, the federal government is considering opening up more sectors of the polity. Secretary to the government of the federation and chairman of the presidential task force (PTF) on Covid-19, Mr Boss Mustapha, said this on Sunday after PTF submitted its report to President Muhammadu Buhari. He said PTF made recommendations on reopening places of worship, schools and businesses across the country. “But you know that Mr President is the only one that can take decisions in respect of that. In the framework, the states are sub-nationals;…
Dear Mr. President, Subject: Mr President, please belong to all of us “One of the swiftest ways of destroying a Kingdom is to give preference of one particular tribe over another or show favour to one group of people rather than another. And to draw near those who should be kept away and keep away those who should be drawn near.” Usman Dan Fodio. I have been prompted to write you this open letter, Mr. President, by the loud sounds of drums, singing and dancing that erupted within many groups in the last few days on the grounds that you…
The new coronavirus is losing its potency and has become much less lethal, a senior Italian doctor said on Sunday. “In reality, the virus clinically no longer exists in Italy,” said Alberto Zangrillo, head of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan in the northern region of Lombardy, which has borne the brunt of Italy’s coronavirus contagion. “The swabs that were performed over the last 10 days showed a viral load in quantitative terms that was absolutely infinitesimal compared to the ones carried out a month or two months ago,” he told RAI television. Italy has the third highest death toll…
Protesters took to the streets across America again Sunday, with violence flaring in pockets of largely peaceful demonstrations fueled by the killings of black people at the hands of police. A truck driver — apparently deliberately — drove into demonstrators in Minneapolis nearly a week after George Floyd died there after pleading for air as an officer pressed a knee into his neck. Protests sprang up from Boston to San Francisco, with people stealing from stores in broad daylight in Philadelphia, cities across California and elsewhere. In Minneapolis, the tanker truck sped into a peaceful crowd of thousands on a…
