PRESS RELEASE Northern Elders Forum is constrained to invite the nation’s attention to the dangers of sustained attempts to raise tensions and create fears among Nigerians until, presumably, they lead to major crisis involving groups and regions in the country. In the last few weeks, the Forum has led many responsible groups and individuals to appeal for restraint and respect for the law in the way we engineer developments that cause tensions, or react to them. Now the nation is facing imminent threats from persons who are bent on pushing all of us nearer to disaster, to help them achieve…
True to its word, the federal government on Saturday frustrated the #OccupyLekkiTollGate protest, with the police arresting 40 would-be protesters as they trooped to the scene in high brow Lekki, Lagos in ones and twos. Some of the arrested persons said they were mere passers-by who had nothing to do with the protest. The arrests, apparently part of the minimum force Defence Minister Bashir Magashi vowed earlier in the day would be applied by government on the protesters, sparked condemnations from the human rights community and the political class. The arrested persons were subsequently arraigned before the Lagos State Mobile…
Fulani herdsmen under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore have vowed to resist any eviction from the South-West, citing their rights as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution to live wherever they desire. Miyetti Allah also vowed to avenge the alleged attacks on and loss of herdsmen and their cattle, saying it would never tolerate any act of injustice on herders. National Secretary of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Alhassan Saleh, stated these in an interview with Sunday PUNCH against a backdrop of the eviction notices issued to criminal herdsmen by some South-West groups and personalities. Saleh said it was wrong…
Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo state, has criticised Bala Mohammed, his Bauchi state counterpart, for defending the use of arms by herders. On Thursday, Mohammed said herders carry weapons because they need to protect themselves. Describing the comments as careless and despicable, Akeredolu said his governor colleague has encouraged all other Nigerians to carry arms. “We read with dismay, the outburst in the purported statement by the Bauchi state governor. We are persuaded to believe he didn’t make that statement,” a statement released by Donald Ojogo, Ondo state commissioner for information and orientation, read. “If indeed he made that statement…

It is envisaged that, over time, the entity will grow to N15 Trillion in assets and capital. Infra-Co will be one of the premier infrastructure finance entities in Africa and will be wholly dedicated to Nigeria’s infrastructure development. The entity has been developed with concept designs from the National Economic Council (NEC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria. The President had asked Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to chair a Steering Committee tasked with…
PRESS RELEASE Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom describes as disappointing, the comments made by his Bauchi State counterpart, Bala Mohammed who blamed him for what he termed ‘negative perception of Fulani herders’ when he spoke on the current security situation in the country. While Ortom will not want to join issues with the Bauchi State Governor, he finds it shocking that a colleague who took the oath of office as he also did, to protect and preserve the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, now takes the lead in violating provisions of the same Constitution by calling for lawlessness.…
A prominent Islamic scholar, Ahmad Gumi, has accused the military of profiting from terrorism. In an interview with ARISE TV, Gumi said some top military officials want insecurity to continue because of the huge funds allocated for tackling it. He also spoke on his recent trips to the forest to engage bandits on the need to embrace peace. “The military is not encouraging matters at all because they are the beneficiaries of this insecurity.” “The bandits are ready to drop their arms and return back to the fold if the federal government will accede to their simple demands such as…

More and more physicians and public health officials are warning that even with the mass rollout of vaccines, Covid may become endemic. The mass delivery of vaccines started in many high-income countries almost two months ago and has since been gathering pace, but the mass immunization of populations will take time. Some low-income countries have not received a single dose of vaccine to protect people most at risk from the coronavirus. More and more physicians and public health officials are warning that even with the mass rollout of safe and effective vaccines, Covid may permanently establish itself. White House coronavirus…
