The protesters, who were mostly from vulnerable rural communities in the area, converged on Zurmi town for the protest, alleging that security agents and the emir, Atiku Abubakar, were not doing enough to protect them. Many persons had been reported killed in a series of attacks on peasant communities in the area and hundreds of others displaced. A resident, who spoke with our correspondent but…

West African regional bloc ECOWAS on Sunday suspended Mali’s membership in response to last week’s coup and said authorities must stick to a timetable for a return to democracy, but stopped short of imposing new sanctions. Leaders of the 15-member Economic Community of West African States held an emergency summit in Ghana’s capital Accra to agree a response to the Malian military’s ouster of a president and prime minister for the second time in nine months. Mali’s neighbours and international powers fear the latest revolt will jeopardise a commitment to hold a presidential election next February, and undermine a regional…
Economic and social activities have halted in Imo over the sit-at-home order by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) over fear of possible attacks. The pro Biafra agitators led by Nnamdi Kanu issued a statement that ordered people from the Southeast to sit at home between May 30 and May 31 for the annual Biafra Remembrance Day. The statement issued by Kanu said the day was set aside in remembrance of over…
Pandemonium broke out on Saturday at Idiroko, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State when some Yoruba nation agitators stormed the area and forcefully opened its land border. They were, however, swiftly repelled by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service who were manning the border town between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. The land border had been closed by the Federal Government since 2019 when it directed that all forms of importation be done through the seaports. A video circulated on social media showed a gun being snatched away from an Immigration officer. In the 19-minute-and-23 -second video clip,…
Simon Lalong, governor of Plateau state, has asked federal government to release funds for the implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP). Lalong said northern governors have accepted modern methods of grazing to explore the business angle of cattle rearing. NLTP was proposed by Audu Ogbeh, former minister of agriculture, in 2018 and was adopted by the national economic council (NEC) headed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo. The approach seeks to provide ranches for livestock with a view of mitigating the incessant farmer-herder clashes. In recent times, the clashes have worsened, leading to loss of lives and properties. To curb…
Every four years, US intelligence agencies compile scenarios that policymakers may face in 20 years. Some of the scenarios are devastating, while others resemble a future version of our current world. What will the world look like in 2040? Peaceful coexistence between the US and China based on mutual economic benefit? A chaotic and divided world trying to recover from major natural disasters caused by climate change? Or a catastrophic World War III? These are some of the questions the US Intelligence Community asks itself when it prepares one of the most important and interesting national security reports. Published every…

Life as depicted in George Orwell’s 1984 “could come to pass in 2024” if lawmakers don’t protect the public against artificial intelligence, Microsoft’s president has warned. Speaking to BBC's Panorama, Brad Smith said it will be "difficult to catch up” with the rapidly advancing technology. The programme explores China’s increasing use of AI to monitor its citizens. Critics fear the state's dominance in the area could threaten democracy. “If we don’t enact the laws that will protect the public in the future, we are going to find the technology racing ahead, and it’s going to be very difficult to catch…
