For the last few years life in rural areas of northwestern Zamfara state has been agonisingly brutish. Gun-toting motorbike gangs have made the state of approximately 15,352 sq miles (39,761 sq km) - an area bigger than countries like Burundi, Lesotho and Rwanda - a haven for wanton killing, rape and kidnapping for ransom. The gang members are devious and well organised, often wearing military fatigues to confuse villagers as they come under attack. This problem, which has festered for years, has now spread to at least five neighbouring states. Various initiatives have been tried in Zamfara to end their…
The court of appeal in Abuja has ordered both Rivers and Lagos states to maintain status quo over the collection of value-added tax (VAT), pending the determination of an appeal filed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). The court gave the ruling on Friday, ordering parties to maintain the “status quo ante bellum” (to maintain the situation as it existed before). The appellate court said the order was to preserve the ‘Res’ (subject matter) of the appeal before it. A three-member panel of justices of the appellate court led by Haruna Tsammani specifically ordered all the parties in the…

President Muhammadu Buhari says the Igbo are enterprising, and as such, contribute significantly to the country’s economy. The president stated this on Thursday at a meeting with southeast leaders, during his one-day visit to Imo state. Buhari had held a closed-door meeting with the southeast leaders. According to a statement by Femi Adesina, presidential spokesperson, Buhari also urged the southeast leaders to sensitise their people on the need to support free and fair elections in 2023. “The fundamental thing about the Igbo people is that there is no town you will visit in Nigeria without seeing the Igbo being in…
The United Nations (UN) has warned that “the collective future of Nigeria is under threat” given rising insecurity and spate of attacks by bandits on schools. The warning comes against the backdrop of recent coordinated killings and kidnappings of schoolchildren across Kaduna, Kebbi, Katsina, Niger and Zamfara states, leading to the forced closure of schools in those states. The organisation lamented in the last academic year, an estimated 1.3 million children were impacted by attacks or abductions in schools in Nigeria. It urged President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to tackle the security challenges ravaging the country to preserve its posterity. United…
