Mobile telephone networks were shut down in the northwestern Nigerian state of Zamfara, residents said on Monday, after authorities ordered a telecoms blackout to help armed forces tackle armed gangs of kidnappers terrorising the area. Two residents of Zamfara, reached by phone after they travelled to neighbouring Sokoto State, said their mobile networks had stopped functioning over the weekend. Calls to police and officials inside the state were not going through. The blackout was “to enable relevant security agencies (to) carry out required activities towards addressing the security challenge in the state”, according to a letter from the Nigerian Communications…
Governor of Zamfara state, Bello Matawalle, on Monday said the government shut down all telecommunications networks in the state to check banditry. Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had ordered telecom operators to suspend their networks in Zamfara. The development followed suspension of weekly markets and other drastic measures in the adjoining troubled Northwest and Northcentral states to check activities of bandits in the regions. Following the development, bandits have reportedly intensified attacks in Zamfara and Katsina, looting food stuff to stock up while the measures remain in place. Matawalle told DW Hausa Service on Monday that the Chief of Army Staff,…
Aminu Masari, governor of Katsina, says many “bandits” are Fulani indigenes whose main occupation is rearing cattle. Speaking on the development in an interview on Channels Television on Monday, Masari said although his revelation may not sit well with some persons, majority of the “bandits” are of the Fulani ethnic extraction. The governor added that the impact of climate change and lack of access…
Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore has decried the anti-open grazing law recently enacted by some states warning it will worsen cattle rustling and undermine the stability of the country. The group described the law against open grazing as satanic and ploy to cripple economic activities of pastoralists. They called on the National Assembly to intervene in the matter saying the law was a violation of the 1999 constitution and would hamper the ability of pastoralists to function effectively. The cattle herders also demanded urgent review of the Land Use Act to accommodate the interest of all land resource users, particularly pastoralists,…
