The Nigerian military said on Thursday a deadly air strike hit an Islamic State camp and that casualties could not be determined, after witnesses said the attack had killed dozens of civilians in the northeast, where the country is waging a 12-year war against jihadist insurgents. Two Nigerian Air Force planes bombed and killed dozens of civilians, mostly fishermen, at a fish market in Daban Masara village, a victim and a resident told Reuters on Tuesday. “Necessary steps were taken to ensure that the presence of the terrorists was ascertained and the strike was precise and professionally executed,” the Nigerian…
More than two thousand British gas stations were still dry on Thursday due a shortage of truck drivers which was starting to disrupt deliveries to pharmacies, while farmers warned a lack of butchers could lead to a massive cull of pigs. In a chaotic week where fights broke out at gas stations and people filled up old water bottles with petrol, British ministers have repeatedly said the crisis was easing, though they ordered soldiers on Wednesday to start driving fuel tankers. Ministers have rejected accusations that the trucker shortage was caused by Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union, pointing to…
Nigerians at all levels have been advised to show more interest in the affairs of the nation and be willing to speak up at all times. A community leader, Toyin Amuzu gave this advice in his message to mark this year's anniversary of Nigeria's Independence. Amuzu, who lamented that Nigeria at 61 isn’t making the desired progress, blamed the non-challant attitude of many Nigerians in choosing their leaders and showing little concern for matters which affect their country. He said it is worrisome that 61 years after Independence, Nigeria is finding it hard to provide basic needs for the people…

VAT: Oyo applies to join Rivers in FIRS appeal

Oyo state government has filed an application before the court of appeal in Abuja to join in the suit between Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and Rivers state government. A federal high court in Port Harcourt had issued an order restraining the FIRS from collecting VAT and personal income tax (PIT) in Rivers state. Although the federal tax authority had appealed for a stay of execution, the court dismissed it on the basis that it would “negate the principle of equity”. Consequently, FIRS went to the court of appeal. On September 10, Lagos state government through its attorney-general, Moyosore Onigbanjo,…

Folasade Yemi-Esan, head of civil service of the federation, disclosed while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the weekly meeting. Authorities in Kaduna State shut down telecoms networks and banned the use of motorcycles on Wednesday as part of a raft of measures to tackle bandit gangs that have caused havoc in the country’s northwest for months. Telecoms blackouts are already in force in neighbouring Zamfara and in parts of several other northwestern states, a tactic aimed at helping the security forces crack down on the gangs by preventing coordination. Bandits seeking ransoms and loot have been blamed by the authorities for a string of mass school abductions and deadly attacks on villages and on military targets that have disrupted…
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, on Wednesday said poor security strategy implementation by the Nigerian Army was responsible for insurgents occupation in many areas of his state. YouTube has said it will remove content that spreads misinformation about all approved vaccines, expanding a ban on false claims about Covid-19 jabs. Videos that say approved vaccines are dangerous and cause autism, cancer or infertility are among those that will be taken down, the company said. The policy includes the termination of accounts of anti-vaccine influencers. Tech giants have been criticised for not doing more to counter false health information on their sites. In July, US President Joe Biden said social media platforms were largely responsible for people's scepticism in getting vaccinated by spreading misinformation, and appealed for them…
