U.S. lawmakers pounded Facebook on Tuesday, accusing CEO Mark Zuckerberg of pushing for higher profits while being cavalier about user safety, and they demanded regulators investigate whistleblower accusations that the social media company harms children’s mental health and stokes divisions. Zuckerberg, hours later in a public Facebook post, defended the company, saying the accusations were at odds with Facebook’s goals. “The argument that we deliberately push content that makes people angry for profit is deeply illogical,” he wrote. “We make money from ads, and advertisers consistently tell us they don’t want their ads next to harmful or angry content. And…
Supreme Court of Nigeria on Monday reserved judgment in the case filed by 36 state governments against the Federal Government over the funding of superior courts created by Section 6 of the constitution. The states, in the suit with Ref. No. SC/655/2020, had asked the apex court to declare among others, that it is the responsibility of the Federal Government to bear both the recurrent and capital expenditures. They also want the court to declare the Executive Order 10 issued by President Muammadu Buhari in 2020 on the funding of the judiciary, particularly at the state level, null and void.…
The BRACED Governors’ Council also known as Southsouth Governors’ Forum said it has approved a joint regional security outfit which would be floated soon. Its chairman and Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, said this was part of the resolutions reached at the end of their meeting at Government House, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Okowa, who read the communique, said BRACED has unanimously supported states on the collection of Valued Added Tax (VAT) and agreed to join the suit at the Supreme Court. The governors resolved: “Bearing in mind that most of the BRACED states have established their state security’s organs,…
Resident doctors in Nigerian public hospitals called off a nine-week strike on Monday, saying some of their grievances had been addressed but others including salary arrears remained outstanding. The strike had begun on Aug. 2, organised by Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to protest against the delayed payment of salaries and allowances — a recurrent problem in Nigeria’s healthcare sector. NARD said resident doctors, medical school graduates training as specialists who play a major role on emergency wards, would return to work on Wednesday after some of the payments had been made. But it called on federal and state…
There was utter confusion in Owerri, Imo State capital, as gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) enforced the sit-at-home order. The gunmen, who stormed streets and markets in Owerri, forced traders to close shops. They shot sporadically in the air to scarce people and motorists. Motorists quickly made U-turn while many passengers disembarked. Some vehicles collided with one another as driver made frantic moves to turn back. The confusion, which started at Wethral road, spread to neighbouring Mbaise road, Douglas road and Naze along Aba- Owerri road. Traders at the multi-million Alaba International market…
American scientists David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian won the 2021 Nobel Prize for Medicine on Monday for the discovery of receptors in the skin that sense temperature and touch and could pave the way for new pain-killers. Their work, carried out independently, has helped show how humans convert the physical impact from heat or touch into nerve impulses that allow us to “perceive and adapt to the world around us,” the Nobel Assembly at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute said. “This knowledge is being used to develop treatments for a wide range of disease conditions, including chronic pain.” Patapoutian, who was born…
The secret wealth and dealings of world leaders, politicians and billionaires has been exposed in one of the biggest leaks of financial documents. Some 35 current and former leaders and more than 300 public officials are featured in the files from offshore companies, dubbed the Pandora Papers. They reveal the King of Jordan secretly amassed £70m of UK and US property. They also show how ex-UK PM Tony Blair and his wife saved £312,000 in stamp duty when they bought a London office. The couple bought an offshore firm that owned the building. The leak also links Russian President Vladimir…
General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye, has said he would get vaccinated against Covid-19 for the sake of preaching the gospel globally. Adeboye stated this at the church’s monthly Holy Ghost Service. He clarified that he has never told anyone not to get the vaccine. Some prominent preachers such as David Oyedepo, Chris Oyakhilome and Johnson Suleman have kicked against vaccination. But Adeboye said: “I never said to you ‘don’t be vaccinated’, you have never heard that from me, “Rather than living in fear or doubt, get vaccinated. If you believe that getting vaccinated would…
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said no democratically elected government since 1999 achieved what his administration had done in six years, but available data shows otherwise. The president, during a televised broadcast to commemorate the 61st anniversary of Nigeria’s independence, said his administration had achieved a lot since coming to power in 2015. “No government since 1999 has done what we have done in six years to put Nigeria back on track,” he said. “A lot has been achieved in the last six years on many fronts: in infrastructure, social care, governance, Nigeria’s image and influence in Africa and the…
Nigeria got approval on Friday for $400 million in World Bank financing to procure and deploy Covid-19 vaccinations, the bank said in a statement. The World Bank board of directors signed off on the financing, provided via the International Development Association, which it said would enable Africa’s most populous nation to purchase Covid-19 vaccines for 40 million people, some 18% of its population, and support vaccine deployment to 110 million people. In a statement, the bank said the money would ensure that the government can vaccinate 51% of its population within two years and “avoid the dreadful consequences of another…
