Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has detained the former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele. Emefiele was picked up on Thursday night, less than an hour after he regained his freedom from the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS. The former CBN governor, it was learned, is currently being interrogated at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. The EFCC is reportedly probing Godwin Emefiele over alleged impropriety during his term as the head of the apex bank. Recall that the DSS arrested Emefiele in June, on the same day President Bola Tinubu suspended him from…
Last week, I bought $400 in Amazon gift cards because I was fooled by an elaborate internet con called the "boss scam". Here's how the scam works, and why almost anyone – even an entrepreneur who doesn't have a boss, or a technology writer like me – can get sucked in. The basic premise of the boss scam is to send a request to someone, ostensibly from their boss, asking them to purchase gift cards as a surprise for valued employees. The scammer then obtains the gift card numbers and uses the cards and the person who bought them learns…

76 arrested for attending gay party in Gombe

Seventy-six people were arrested for attending a birthday party for gay people in northern Nigeria, the country's paramilitary agency said on Monday, adding that the organiser had also planned to hold a same sex wedding, which is illegal. There are the latest arrests targeting LGBTQ Nigerians after police in August raided a gay wedding in the southern city of Warri in Delta state, and arrested dozens of people. The accused are out on bail. In Nigeria, like in most parts of Africa, homosexuality is generally viewed as unacceptable, and a 2014 anti-gay law took effect. Buhari Saad, the Nigeria Security…

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has said the agency does not issue arrest warrants for loan defaulters as allegedly claimed by some of these loan companies. In a statement released on the official X account of the Commission on Friday, the EFCC stated that they do not issue arrest warrants as purported by these companies. According to the EFCC, some of these companies send out documents with lists of those on the Commission’s alleged arrest list to scare defaulters into paying their loans. Debunking this claim, the Commission warned such companies to desist from such ‘fraudulent engagements as the EFCC…

In 2012, someone stole 50,000 bitcoin from the Silk Road, an illegal dark web marketplace. Over time, the value of the stolen bitcoin skyrocketed to more than $3 billion dollars and for years it remained one of the biggest mysteries in the world of cryptocurrency. Almost a decade after the 2012 hack, the thief made a critical mistake that allowed the IRS-CI to crack the case. CNBC obtained never-before-seen footage that shows how investigators linked the thief to the crypto heist. Athens, Georgia, is home to the University of Georgia, and the police there are used to college town-type crimes:…

At least 50 people, including women and children, were abducted and three others were killed in an attack by gunmen in Bagega, a mining village in Nigeria's northwest Zamfara state, residents said on Tuesday. Kidnapping for ransom has become commonplace in northwestern Nigeria in recent years where armed gangs, often referred to locally as bandits, have targeted villages, schools, and travelers, demanding millions of naira in ransom and making it unsafe to travel by road or to farm in some areas.
