INEC heads to Supreme court as Appeal court nullifies deregistration of political parties

Court of appeal in Abuja has ordered Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enlist 22 political parties which were deregistered. In February, INEC had de-registered 74 parties for “failing to meet the criteria provided for by section 225(a) of 1999 constitution (as amended)”. Some of the parties jointly filed a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/444/2019, asking the court to determine whether INEC has the constitutional power to deregister them. INEC to publish results from polling units electronically

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched a portal where election results from polling units can be viewed in real time. In a statement on Thursday, INEC spokesman, Mr Festus Okoye, said the portal will “strengthen the transparency in the election result management system.” He said the use of the portal will start with Nasarawa central state constituency election after which it will also be deployed in Edo and Ondo governorship polls. Ondo Assembly suspends another lawmaker

The only lawmaker elected on the platform of Zenith Labour Party in the Ondo House of Assembly, Mr Leonard Akinribido, has been suspended. End of road for Melaye as Appeal Court dismisses suit against Adeyemi

Court of Appeal in Abuja has dismissed the appeal by Mr Dino Melaye, challenging election of Mr Smart Adeyemi as winner of the last election in Kogi West Senatorial District. A three-man panel of the court, led by Mr Ibrahim Saulawa, unanimously resolved all seven issues, identified for determination, against the appellant (Melaye). Former commissioner for justice and attorney-general of Ondo state, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, has clinched the ticket of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the October 10 election.
