President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday inaugurated a Tripartite Consultative Committee of Executive, Legislature and leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House, Abuja. He named Vice president Yemi Osinbajo as chairman of the committee. Mr Buhari, while speaking at the occasion, said enhanced consultation within the governing APC would strengthen its internal democracy, and improve chances of winning elections. The President said amicable resolution of conflicts in the party through regular consultations will create more understanding. He said: “Let me welcome all of you to this first Consultative Committee of APC, our members of the National…
Former Secretary to Ondo State Government, Mr Ifedayo Abegunde has made a u-turn on his political stand, as he reunites with the state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu. Abegunde had shortly before the governorship primary election of All Progressive Congress (APC) resigned his appointment as SSG and teamed up with another governorship aspirant, Mr Segun Abraham. However, Abraham later stepped down for Akeredolu in the primary election, a development which caused serious confusion in Abegunde’s camp. Abegunde was quoted to have alleged that Akeredolu did not win the 2016 election, but some individuals including himself allegedly rigged the election in his…
The Saturday meeting held at the private residence of a former of governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, has been described as a gathering for ambitions without any intention whatsoever of reconciling aggrieved members of All Progressives Congress (APC) or moving the party forward in anyway in Oyo state. A group within the party, The APC Core Progressives Forum, said in a release made available to journalists, in Ibadan yesterday, the meeting was “suspect” and should be disregarded by the national secretariat of the party, as none of the known APC leaders and aggrieved people were in attendance. According…
A screenshot of an April 13, 1997 interview Bola Tinubu granted ThisDay with the headline “I Don’t Believe in One Nigeria” trended on social media this week. In my social media commentary on the headline, I pointed out that, “Nigerian politicians are shamelessly situational ‘patriots.’ They're irredentists when they're outside the orbit of power and exaggerated ‘patriots’ when they have access to the public till. A man who didn't believe in Nigeria when he didn't have his way now wants to lead it. Ha!” Tinubu’s defenders said his repudiation of Nigeria was informed by Sani Abacha’s brutal dictatorship, which disillusioned…
Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has described the call by senate for proposals and memoranda seeking a review of the 1999 constitution as “a waste of time, energy and resources”. NEF expressed its reservation on the proposed constitution review in a statement issued on Sunday by director, publicity and advocacy, NEF, Mr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed. On February 12, 2020, senate inaugurated an ad hoc committee on the review of 1999 constitution, chaired by Mr Ovie Omo-Agege, deputy senate president. Also, a statement issued last Thursday by Omo-Agege on behalf of the committee had requested the “general public, executive and judicial bodies, civil…

PRESS RELEASE After a week of total silence and discreet consultations with various Yoruba Leaders and Traditional rulers, the apex organ of the Yoruba World Congress has painfully but patriotically relieved Banji Akintoye, a retired Professor of history, of his position as Protem Leader of the global organization. In a statement jointly signed by four of the co-founders of the world wide organization, namely Amos Akingba, Tola Adeniyi, Solagbade Popoola and Anthony Kila, and shared with all registered members of YWC, Akintoye is charged with gross incompetence, indecisiveness, obnoxious dictatorship, and absolute disregard for laid down rules, order, structure, consistency…
Sikiru Ajayi and Biodun Adeniran report The Yoruba World Congress (YWC) is in trouble and the body might soon die or break. The body formed just over a year ago to start a new dawn in the Yoruba Nation seems to be reaching its end thanks to infighting caused by allegations of various kind among its leadership. In the past one year, YWC has gained the attention and respect of many Yoruba people at home and abroad because of its innovative ways of doing things. In just one year, YWC that led the successful Amotekun rally has hosted what was…

Russian opposition leader 'poisoned'

Russian opposition figure, Mr Alexei Navalny is unconscious in hospital suffering from suspected poisoning, his spokeswoman has said. The anti-corruption campaigner fell ill during a flight and the plane made an emergency landing in Omsk, Ms Kira Yarmysh said, adding that they suspected something had been mixed into his tea. Navalny, 44, has been a staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin. In June he described a vote on constitutional reforms as a "coup" and a "violation of the constitution". The reforms allow Mr Putin to serve another two terms in office. British Foreign Secretary, Mr Dominic Raab said he was…
Mali’s president announced his resignation late Tuesday, just hours after armed soldiers seized him from his home in a dramatic power grab following months of protests demanding his ouster. The news of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita’s departure was met with jubilation by anti-government demonstrators and alarm by former colonial ruler France, and other allies and foreign nations. Speaking on national broadcaster ORTM just before midnight, a distressed Keita, wearing a mask amid the Covid-19 pandemic, said his resignation — three years before his final term was due to end — was effective immediately. A banner across the bottom of the…
