Anambra rerun: Ex-APGA chair, Umeh, wins

Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Mr Victor Umeh of All Progressives Grand Alliance winner of January 13 Anambra Central Senatorial rerun election. Umeh, a former National Chairman of APGA, beat 13 other candidates, including current Labour and Employment Minister, Mr Chris Ngige of All Progressives Congress, with a wide margin to emerge senator representing Anambra Central. Ngige had asked his supporters to boycott the election, saying he had written to INEC to inform it of his withdrawal from the race. The minister wondered why the electoral body “mischievously included his name on the list of contestants” after he had…
Just like Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Mr John Onaiyekan, President of Christian Association of Nigeria, Mr Samson Ayokunle, has urged Christians to be actively involved in politics. A statement from Ayokunle’s special assistant on media, Mr Adebayo Oladeji, said CAN President made the call at the 57th retreat of Nigerian Baptist Convention, on Saturday. According to the statement Ayokunle advised Christians to become card carrying members of political parties and aspire to take over political offices like other concerned Nigerian. “The practice of separation of State and Church must be redefined. While the State must not be allowed to control…
It should be perfectly understandable if, in the wake of the recent coup, Nigerians seem a great deal more sceptical about their prospects than perhaps they need be. Two coups in 20 months, separated from a long stretch of military rule only by four brief years of ignominious civilian administration, do not add up to any settled understanding of the essence of government. What they do create is a climate of uncertainty and instability, conditions that are hardly helpful to a nation so desperately in need of orderly progress and development. Yet, despite the havoc frequent coups continue to do…
Governor of Benue State, Mr. Samuel Ortom, on Saturday, blamed the Federal Government for the killing and destructions by herdsmen in the state. Ortom, at a meeting with Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Security, which is in the state on a fact-finding mission on the attacks, accused President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; National Security Adviser, Mr Babagana Monguno; and Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, of ignoring several warnings of the impending attack on communities in Benue. The governor also blamed security agencies for the continued killings of people in the state by herdsmen since 2008. Ortom told the…
Governors and leaders of some key socio-cultural organisations in southern part of the country have rejected the proposed plan by the Federal Government to establish cattle colonies in all the states of the federation. They described the arrangement as a ploy to forcefully snatch lands for the use of Fulani armed militia who, according to them, will sooner than later, unleash terror on their host communities. They also warned state governments not to be naïve in embracing the proposal which they alleged was aimed at creating a large expanse of land for a group of terrorists. It’s a strange, deceptive…
President Muhammadu Buhari has denounced a Twitter handle message in circulation purportedly belonging to him. Mr Buhari, in a statement Saturday by his spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, said the fake tweet with the spurious message sought to justify attacks by herdsmen that they were only defending themselves. According to him, evil doers and enemies of our country are obviously at work, seeking ways to further advance their pernicious acts. The statement partly read: "The message is denounced in its entirety, and President Buhari stands by his earlier condemnation of the killings in Benue and other parts of the country as…
At least 10 people were feared killed and even more sustained severe injuries in new attacks on two communities in Kaduna State on Saturday. Properties were also looted and houses razed during the predawn attacks which, witnesses said, occurred in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, about 125 kilometres west of Kaduna town, and bore the marks of killer herdsmen. “Herdsmen entered the villages between Friday night and early Saturday morning and killed about 10 people,” a witness said, preferring not to be named. Kaduna State police commissioner, Mr Agyole Abeh confirmed the attacks, but said only four were killed and…
Hours after Benue state government buried over 70 victims of the January 1 attacks by suspected herdsmen, general overseer of Living Faith Church also known as Winners Chapel, Mr David Oyedepo, on Saturday morning condemned the killings. His counterpart, fiery cleric, Mr Paul Enenche of the Dunamis International Gospel Centre, also asked the rampaging herdsmen to relocate to the dreaded Sambisa forest to feed their cattle rather than kill and maim innocent Nigerians in their bid to acquire land for grazing. Over 70 persons were killed by suspected herdsmen who invaded five villages in Guma and Logo Local Governments on…
Leader of Nigeria's Shi'ite Muslim sect, rumoured to have died in detention, made his first public appearance in two years on Saturday, after police arrested dozens of members of the group during protests calling for his release this week. Mr Ibrahim Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), has been imprisoned at an unknown location without charge since December 2015 after his followers clashed with the army in Zaria. A judicial inquiry the following year said 347 IMN members were killed by the military and buried in mass graves. The violent repression of IMN and detention of Zakzaky,…
Newly-freed Chibok schoolgirl, Salomi Pogu, abducted by Boko Haram in 2014 but rescued last week, has given details of how she managed to escape from her captors. Pogu, amongst over 200 school girls kidnapped by the militant group, is the latest of 107 girls to either escape, be rescued or freed. Nigerian Army said Pogu and another Boko Haram captive, Jamila Adamu, a 14-year-old teenager found with a baby, were rescued on January 4. The two girls recounted their experiences from a government safe-house where they are being accommodated by Borno state government. The girls said they regained their freedom…
