Nigeria lost its crown as Africa’s largest crude producer as Angola surpassed the country for the first time in more than five years. Angola’s average daily output in August of 1.17 million barrels was more than Nigeria’s at 1.13 million barrels, according to Bloomberg’s survey of monthly OPEC output. The last time that happened was in April 2017 when both nations were pumping about 500,000 barrels a day more, the same data show. Nigeria’s production has declined steadily since 2020 and has reached multi-decade lows this year. The government has blamed massive levels of theft on the pipelines that crisscross…
Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and a rock of stability across much of a turbulent century, has died. She was 96. Buckingham Palace made the announcement in a statement. A link to the almost-vanished generation that fought World War II, she was the only monarch most Britons have ever known, and her name defines an age: the modern Elizabethan Era. The impact of her loss will be huge, and unpredictable, both for the nation and for the monarchy, an institution she helped stabilize and modernize across decades of huge social change and family scandals. With the death of the…

The constables gathered at the Oke-Fia roundabout and moved through Alekunwodo to the Olaiya areas of Osogbo, the capital of Osun State. They were dressed in the police uniform and carried placards with inscriptions like “Pay us now,” “We’re dying,” We’re hungry,” “18 months no kobo,” “Okada riders are sleeping with our wives,” among others. Some of the protesters told PREMIUM TIMES that their “wives have been snatched because of their inability to provide for their families.” The constabularies said…
A new report by the United Nations Women and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) has revealed that achieving gender equality cannot no longer be possible by 2030. The report states that at the current rate of progress of Sustainable Development Goal 5, it may take close to 300 years to achieve full gender equality. The report, which is titled; “Gender Snapshot 2022,” “shows that global challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath, violent conflict, climate change, and the backlash against women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights are further heightening gender disparities.”…

Federal government says it can only afford a 23.5 percent salary increase for lecturers of all categories, except professors. Adamu Adamu, minister of education, said this on Tuesday at a meeting with pro-chancellors and vice-chancellors of federal universities on the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Speaking at the meeting, which held in Abuja, Adamu said aside from the salary increment, the government made other offers regarding the demands of ASUU. “That the federal government can only afford a 23.5% salary increase for all categories of the workforce in federal universities, except for the professorial cadre…
Commandant General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Audi, has dissolved the corps’ anti-vandalism units nationwide. Audi gave the dissolution order during a meeting with senior officers and all state commandants of the corps on Tuesday in Abuja. He said the action was sequel to insinuations and reports in the public domain that security operatives were likely involved in oil theft and related crimes. “There are also reports that our officers are doing their jobs, but not satisfactorily enough,” he said. The commandant-General said the squad would be reconstituted in due time for better service delivery. He…
Many fillings stations were shut on Tuesday leading to lengthy queues by motorists for Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, at the few outlets that dispensed the commodity in Abuja and neighbouring states. Petrol scarcity resumed again in the Federal Capital Territory and environs on Tuesday after about a month break, as motorists and other PMS users imagined when they would see the last of fuel queues in Abuja. The petrol scarcity and its attendant queues on Tuesday were due to the warning strike embarked upon by the Suleja Depot Branch of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria. The…
Europe is struggling to contain an energy crisis that could lead to rolling blackouts, shuttered factories and a deep recession. The primary cause: Russia has choked off the supplies of cheap natural gas that the continent depended on for years to run factories, generate electricity and heat homes. That has pushed European governments into a desperate scramble for new supplies and for ways to blunt the impact as economic growth slows and household utility bills rise. The crisis deepened when Russia’s state-owned exporter Gazprom said the main pipeline carrying gas to Germany would stay closed, blaming an oil leak and…
