The World Bank says inflation is likely to push an additional one million Nigerians into poverty by the end of 2022. The international financial organisation made the projection in its latest Nigeria Development Update (NDU), released on Tuesday. The report, titled ‘The continuing urgency of business unusual’, said inflation in Nigeria, already one of the highest in the world before the war in Ukraine, is expected to increase further as a result of the rise in global fuel and food prices caused by the war. “And that, the World Bank estimates, is likely to push an additional one million Nigerians…

Russia has warned that Europe will 'disappear' in a nuclear apocalypse in the Kremlin's latest doomsday threat for supplying Ukraine with missiles. Viacheslav Volodin, the head of the State Duma, lashed out after Poland's former foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Western allies could send more weaponry to besieged Kyiv. Sikorski claimed Vladimir Putin had violated the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances of 1994, which justifies the Western delivery of nuclear weapons. He told Ukrainian channel Espreso TV the supplies would 'give Ukraine the opportunity to defend its independence'. Ukraine agreed to give up all its nuclear weapons left over from…
Russia told Ukrainian forces holed up in a chemical plant in the embattled city of Sievierodonetsk to lay down their arms by early Wednesday, pressing its advantage in the battle for control of eastern Ukraine. Ukraine is calling for an increase in Western heavy weapons after Russia committed the bulk of its firepower to the eastern Donbas region, a topic expected to feature prominently at a meeting of NATO defence ministers on Wednesday in Brussels. Ukraine says more than 500 civilians are trapped alongside soldiers inside the Azot chemical factory where its forces have resisted weeks of Russian bombardment and…
About 19 hours after Sunday’s system collapse, the Nigerian national grid is yet to recover to its previous level of 3,700 megawatts (MW) as less than 12 power plants had fluctuated power generation on Monday afternoon. Although the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) was battling to manage the grid, stakeholders in the power sector are yet to be briefed on the immediate cause of the system collapse, which was the fourth this year. The system collapse incident of Sunday lasted for about three hours, from 6:45pm to around 10pm, when power consumers began confirming restoration of supply in parts of…

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has provided near-daily updates of Russia’s invasion on social media; viral video posts have shown the effectiveness of Western weapons in the hands of Ukrainian forces; and the Pentagon has regularly held briefings on developments in the war. But despite the flow of all this news to the public, U.S. intelligence agencies have less information than they would like about Ukraine’s operations and possess a far better picture of Russia’s military, its planned operations and its successes and failures, according to current and former officials. Governments often withhold information from the public for operational security.…
Is it better to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin over his invasion of Ukraine or to isolate him? Should Kyiv make concessions to end the war, or would that embolden the Kremlin? Are ramped up sanctions on Russia worth the collateral damage? These are some of the questions testing the international alliance that swiftly rallied around Ukraine in the days after the Russian invasion but that, three months into the war, is straining, officials and diplomats told Reuters. As Western governments grapple with spiralling inflation and energy costs, countries including Italy and Hungary have called for a quick ceasefire.…
Russian forces cut off the last routes for evacuating citizens from the eastern Ukrainian city of Sievierodonetsk, a Ukrainian official said, as the Kremlin pushed for victory in the Donbas region. The last bridge to the city was destroyed, trapping any remaining civilians and making it impossible to deliver humanitarian supplies, said regional governor Sergei Gaidai, adding that some 70% of the city was under Russian control. Ukraine has issued increasingly urgent calls for more Western heavy weapons to help defend Sievierodonetsk, which Kyiv says could hold the key to the battle for the eastern Donbas region and the course…
