Travellers on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Monday experienced a traffic gridlock on the Magboro-Berger section of the road, with some lamenting that they spent almost 16 hours on the road. Construction works on that axis continued by Julius Berger. However, traffic worsened on Monday. Our correspondents observed that the gridlock started from Magboro, Ogun State inward Lagos State on Monday early hours. A traveller, Oyinda Kazeem, regretted travelling, noting that she missed her appointment due to the traffic. She said, “I had an appointment with a mentor I haven’t seen in a long time so I travelled from Ibadan. He…
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is calling on the West to speed up deliveries of weapons systems as Ukrainian troops move to consolidate control over a large swath of northeastern territory seized back from Russia. FIGHTING * Zelenskiy said Ukrainian forces had retaken 6,000 square km (2,400 square miles) of Russian-held territory since the beginning of the month. * Russia has largely ceded its gains near Kharkiv and many of the withdrawing Russian soldiers have exited Ukraine, moving over the border back into Russia, a senior U.S. military official said. * Vitaly Ganchev, the Russian-installed head of Moscow's occupation administration in…
Ukraine says it has made significant gains in pushing back Russian troops, retaking more than 3,000 sq km (1,158 sq miles) of territory in recent days. Jonathan Beale, the BBC's defence correspondent, takes a closer look at why they have been so successful - and what hurdles Ukraine's forces may still face in winning the war. "Don't underestimate the Ukrainian's ability to surprise," a senior US military officer told me early this summer, just as Russia was continuing to make advances in the Donbas. Ukraine's ability to surprise has become a hallmark of this war: from the Russian retreat from…
Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, says the federal government resolved to take the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to court because talks between both parties have collapsed. The court case came up a few days after the federal government announced pay rise for university teachers, and promised that N150 billion “shall be provided for in the 2023 Budget as funds for the revitalisation of federal universities, which is to be disbursed to the Institutions in the First Quarter of the year.” Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, who made the announcement during a meeting with Pro-Chancellors and Vice…
The number of Nigeria’s Supreme Court judges has dropped to 13, widely coming short of the court’s full complement of 21 justices as stipulated in the Constitution, by eight. The number had spiralled down from 20 that it was in November 2020, less than two years ago, to 14 in June this year, with the sudden resignation of the immediate-past Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Muhammad. It has now further dropped to 13, as Abdu Aboki, who joined the bench of the Supreme Court less than two years ago in November 2020, retires. A statement by the Supreme Court’s…
Department of State Services (DSS) has described the outcome of its investigation on Tukur Mamu, publisher of Desert Herald, as “mind-boggling”. It would be recalled that Mamu was arrested at the Kano International Airport, after he returned from Egypt where he had been detained on his way to Saudi Arabia for lesser hajj. Mamu, an aide to Ahmad Gumi, a popular Islamic cleric, has been involved in negotiations for the release of persons abducted during an attack on a train in Kaduna, in March 2022. Commenting on his arrest, Gumi had said detaining Mamu is an act of terrorism and…
Ukraine accused Russian forces of attacking civilian infrastructure in response to a rapid weekend offensive by Ukrainian troops that drove Russia to abandon its main bastion in the Kharkiv region. FIGHTING * Ukrainian forces have advanced north from Kharkiv to within 50km (30 miles) of the border with Russia and are also pressing to the south and east in the same region, Ukrainian chief commander General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi said. * Zaluzhnyi said Ukraine has retaken more than 3,000 sq km (1,158 sq miles) this month. * Britain's Defence ministry said Ukrainian forces had continued making gains in the Kharkiv region…
National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says Nigeria generated N714.40 billion from company income tax (CIT) in the second quarter (Q2) of 2022. NBS disclosed this in its company income tax (CIT) report for Q2 2022. CIT is a tax on the profits of registered companies in Nigeria. It also includes the tax on the profits of foreign companies carrying on any business in Nigeria. The CIT is currently charged at the rate of 30 percent for companies having more than N100 million in turnover — and 20 percent for companies with a turnover between N25 million and N100 million. According…
Moscow abandoned its main bastion in northeastern Ukraine on Saturday, in a sudden collapse of one of the war's principal front lines after Ukrainian forces made a rapid advance. The swift fall of Izium in Kharkiv province was Moscow's worst defeat since its troops were forced back from the capital Kyiv in March. Ukraine hailed it as a turning point in the 6-month-old war, with thousands of Russian soldiers leaving behind ammunition stockpiles and equipment as they fled. Russian forces used Izium as the logistics base for one of their main campaigns - a months-long assault from the north on…
Nigeria's crude oil production fell below 1 million barrels per day (bpd) in August, figures from its regulator show, as the nation grappled with rampant theft from its pipelines and years of underinvestment. The decline is a further threat to strained finances in Africa's most populous nation and cuts global oil supply amid soaring energy costs due to the war in Ukraine. Nigeria's total oil and condensates output dropped to an annual low of 1.18 million bpd in August, data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission showed. Richard Bronze, head of geopolitics for consultancy Energy Aspects, said exports were…
