Five people were swept away by a flood in the Oyatoki area of Agege, Lagos state on Saturday. In a statement by Ibrahim Farinloye, zonal coordinator, Southwest, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the incident involved two vehicles — a Lexus jeep carrying three persons and a Toyota with three occupants. Farinloye said six persons were reported to have been swept away when rainwater overflowed an uncompleted canal in the area. He, however, said three of the victims have been rescued while two are still missing. “The residents reportedly warned the people in the vehicles to desist from passing through the…

Ukrainian defenders battled on Saturday to contain Russian forces along several fronts, officials said, as the United States urged China to align itself with the West in opposing the invasion following an ill-tempered G20 meeting. A missile strike on the northeastern city of Kharkiv wounded three civilians, its governor said, though Russia's main attacks appeared focused southeast of there in Luhansk and Donetsk. Those two provinces, parts of which were held by pro-Russian separatists before the conflict began in February, comprise the eastern industrial region of the Donbas. Ukrainian officials reported strikes in both on Saturday, while Britain's Ministry of…

Ukraine urged its allies on Friday to send more weapons as its forces dug in to slow Russia's military advance through the eastern Donbas region, while its chief negotiator said a turning part was approaching in the conflict. Signalling that the Kremlin was in no mood for compromise, President Vladimir Putin said continued use of sanctions against Russia for the invasion it launched in February risked causing "catastrophic" energy price rises. His top diplomat, Sergei Lavrov, clashed with his Western counterparts at a G20 meeting, where they urged Russia to allow Kyiv to ship blockaded Ukrainian grain out to an…

In a hawkish speech to parliamentary leaders more than four months into the war, Putin said Russia had barely got started in Ukraine and the prospects for negotiation would grow dimmer the longer the conflict dragged on. "We have heard many times that the West wants to fight us to the last Ukrainian. This is a…
