Four areas of Ukraine controlled by Russia and pro-Moscow forces were preparing to hold referendums on Friday on joining Russia, a move widely condemned by the West as illegitimate and a precursor to illegal annexation. DIPLOMACY * Voting in the Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia provinces, representing around 15% of Ukrainian territory, is due to run from Friday to Tuesday. Incorporating the four areas into Russia, Moscow could justify military escalation as necessary to defend its territory. * World leaders gathering at the United Nations General Assembly in New York called for Russia to be held accountable for human rights…
A four-year dispute between Bola Tinubu, a frontline presidential candidate, and Oladapo Apara, former MD of a Lagos-based tax consulting agency, over N18bn ($41.8m) benefits and a separate allegation of fraud to the tune of N20bn ($46.5m) has been settled. The development has also forced the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop a probe into the Lagos political heavyweight, The Africa Report can confirm. Apara, who was the managing director of Alpha Beta Consulting, sued Tinubu for controlling the firm, orchestrating his sacking and withholding N18bn – the total sum of his share profit for the period he…
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday criticised fellow leaders who extend term limits to cling to power, saying this was having a "corrosive" effect, and promised free and fair elections when the country elects his successor in February. Buhari, 79, who took office after defeating a sitting president in elections in 2015, will make way for a new leader in what would be another peaceful transfer of power, helping cement Nigeria's democratic credentials in a region prone to coups. Nigeria ended decades of military rule in 1999. Speaking at his last United Nations General Assembly, Buhari said Africa's most populous nation…
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it will appeal a court ruling which directed the union to call off its nationwide strike. ASUU has been on strike since February 14 to press home the demand for improved funding for universities, a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues. Several meetings between ASUU and the federal government have ended in deadlock. Consequently, the federal government went to the national industrial court to challenge the strike. Delivering a ruling on Wednesday, Polycarp Hamman, the judge, granted the federal government’s application for an interlocutory injunction to restrain ASUU from continuing with…

Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Andrew Emwanta, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing reporters after the State Executive Council Meeting. The measure, Emwanta said, is to cut wastages in government and eliminate duplication of functions, but did not state if it will lead to job loss. What to know after Day 211 of Russia-Ukraine war

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy demanded a special United Nations tribunal impose "just punishment" on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, including financial penalties and stripping Moscow of its veto power in the Security Council. DIPLOMACY/POLITICS * Russia and Ukraine carried out an unexpected prisoner swap, the largest since the war began and involving almost 300 people, including 10 foreigners. * Putin's thinly veiled threat to use nuclear weapons was "dangerous and reckless rhetoric", NATO's secretary general Jens Stoltenberg said. * "If the territorial integrity of our…
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has said Nigerians are fed up with governments at all levels, warning that the electorate would shock politicians and political parties in the forthcoming 2023 elections. Speaking to journalists in Benin, Edo State capital, on Tuesday, Obaseki said politicians should expect surprise from the electorate due to poor governance and inefficiency. “Nigerians are fed up with the inefficiencies and failures of government officials and other representatives and will reject the same if nothing is done to change the narrative. No political party today can beat its chest and say they will win or have…
Nigeria's total public debt rose 3% to $103.3 billion in the second quarter of this year, largely driven by local borrowing to finance the budget deficit, the Debt Management Office (DMO)said. Nigeria's deficit has grown this year due to the high cost of a fuel subsidy at a time when oil revenue has fallen due to crude theft and vandalism of pipelines. The DMO said in its latest data that public debt increased from $100.07 billion as of March this year to $103.3 billion by the end of June. Although the debt constitutes 23% of the country's gross domestic product…
