Nigerian governors are of the opinion that elections may not hold in several Northwest states as a result of the prevalent insecurity in the geopolitical zone. Northwest comprises seven states — Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara. TheCable understands that the governors shared their perspective with President Muhammadu Buhari in a policy brief. The brief was part of the political economy situation review sent to the president in July 2022. The governors asked the president to expedite actions on various promises to address insecurity, according to a copy of the review seen by TheCable. INSECURITY IN NORTHWEST To…

Wike leads PDP govs to meet Tinubu in London

There are strong indications that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, is intensifying efforts to get the support of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike for the 2023 presidential poll. Contrary to some online reports that the duo met in France on Tuesday, multiple sources confirmed that Tinubu and Wike met in London, the United Kingdom, on Monday as part of moves to work together ahead of the election. It was gathered that some APC and Peoples Democratic Party governors also attended the crucial meeting. Prior to the Monday meeting, the ruling party had attempted to cash in on…
Peter Obi is hardly a political outsider, but the bespectacled former governor says he is looking to harness Nigerians' anger with the status quo to power his third-party presidential bid. Obi, 61, has generated substantial buzz among younger voters in Africa's most populous democracy, where the average age is 18, but the president - and both major-party candidates for the February 2023 election - are septuagenarian political veterans. His followers, who call themselves "Obi-dients", say he can solve what ails Nigeria, including unprecedented insecurity, industrial-scale oil theft and allegations of widespread corruption eight years after President Muhammadu Buhari ran promising…
The choice of a same faith ticket by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 presidential election is controversial, avoidable and ill-timed, according to Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka. Soyinka stated this while fielding questions in an interview with Channels TV anchor, Ladi Akeredolu-Ale. The Nobel Laureate who spoke on a wide range of issues, noted that he may not “give a damn if the president, vice president, speaker, etc come from the same village, have the same religion, belong to the same tribe,” but Nigeria is not ready for a Muslim-Muslim ticket. He added that political leaders should have…
Some of the presidential candidates for next year’s election attended the 2022 conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Lagos where they spoke about the country’s leadership challenges. Some of the candidates who attended the conference were Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), Adewole Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Dumebi Kachikwu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) who were originally invited to the conference did not attend.…
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has denied reports that he endorsed the presidential ambition of the APC candidate, Bola Tinubu, when he visited him in Abeokuta. In a statement by Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, on Saturday, the former president said the statements coming from those claiming to be supporters of Mr Tinubu are unhelpful. He said the discussion during the visit was “more brotherly than political.” Obasanjo’s aide further said the former President has neither agreed nor disapproved of Tinubu’s ‘request’. “Those claiming to be insiders at the meeting issuing statement on the discussion and those crediting to…
National Chairperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu, has said Nigeria can borrow money for development till eternity. He stated this when he appeared on Trust TV on Tuesday. Adamu’s comment comes at a time that the International Monetary Funds warned that Nigeria may spend nearly 100 per cent of its revenue on debt servicing by 2026. According to the Debt Management Office (DMO), as of March 2022, Nigeria’s total debt portfolio (FG, State and FCT) was N41.6 million. The country’s public debt has risen the most under the APC-led Buhari administration when compared to previous governments since…
Kenya's elections chief declared Deputy President William Ruto the winner of a tight presidential race on Monday but some senior election officials disowned the result, fuelling fears of widespread violence like that seen after previous disputed polls. Hailing the electoral commission as "heroes" after he was declared the winner, Ruto said: "There is no looking back. We are looking to the future. We need all hands on deck to move forward." The 55-year-old had made Kenya's class divisions the centrepiece of his campaign to become Kenya's fifth president, promising to reward low-income "hustlers." He was also scornful of Kenya’s political…
Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State has tendered apology to Catholic faithful over a remark he made while defending his appointment as Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council. Addressing reporters at Aso Rock on Tuesday, Lalong had said as a born, baptised and confirmed Catholic, who has the highest award from the papacy, Knight of Saint Gregory the Great, the Pope has not told him there was anything wrong being the lead campaigner of the ruling party, especially over the Muslim-Muslim ticket. “For those who are talking about Muslim-Muslim ticket, I don’t even know where they are.…
The emergence of Bola Tinubu as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Borno governor, Kashim Shettima, as his running mate, both Muslims, have been described as reprehensible and irresponsible. Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Mathew Kukah, who said this during a television interview, insisted that the action of the party in fielding a same faith ticket would set the country backwards. He said the “crime scene” where this “problem” started was in 1984 when then military head of state, Muhammadu Buhari took Tunde Idiagbon, also a Muslim as his deputy. He however said Nigerians…
