Next February, Nigerians will elect the successor to president Muhammadu Buhari whose second and final four-year term will end in May. The contest is mainly between three frontrunners: Bola Tinubu of Buhari’s All Progressives Congress, Atiku Abubakar of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, and Peter Obi, a former state governor of the Labour Party. Beyond the presidency, there will be over 1,400 other races to follow within the elections’ two-week period including 28 state governorships and legislature seats. That is a lot of races to follow but with increasing internet penetration and social media, some companies and civil society…
Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, and Atiku Abubakar, the standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, failed to show up at a town hall meeting for presidential candidates on Sunday. The presidential town hall series is an initiative of Arise Television and the Centre for Democracy and Development. The candidates in attendance were Peter Obi, flagbearer of the Labour Party; Rabiu Kwakwanso, presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, and Kola Abiola, the standard bearer of the Peoples Redemption Party. Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta state governor and vice-presidential candidate of the PDP, was in attendance to…
Northern States Christian Elders Forum (NOSCEF) has called on Nigerians, irrespective of ethno-religious differences to ensure that the same faith ticket for the 2023 general elections does not see the light of the day. The elders noted that if the same faith is not rendered useless in 2023, it may end up standing the test of time in subsequent elections in the country to further divide the people. In his welcome address yesterday at the 2022 annual congress of the forum, National Chairman of NOSCEF, Ejoga Inalegwu said: “It is our responsibility as Christians in the North to kill Muslim-Muslim…
Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday appeared set to return to power as head of Israel’s most right-wing government ever after winning this week’s national election, with the current caretaker prime minister conceding defeat. Final results showed Netanyahu’s Likud Party and its ultranationalist and religious partners capturing a solid majority in Israel’s Knesset, or parliament. The strong showing promised to end the political gridlock that has paralyzed Israel for the past three and a half years. But the planned agenda of the new government expected to take office — including an overhaul of the country’s legal system and a…
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, yesterday, revealed that the electoral umpire would spend N355 billion in the 2023 general elections. Already, N305 billion has been approved by the lawmakers. However, the electoral body said it has budgeted another N50 billion for its annual budget in 2023, an increment of N10 billion compared to 2022 budget which was N40 billion as approved by the National Assembly. Yakubu spoke when he appeared at the Senate Committee on INEC. In the 2023 budgeted submitted to the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters for consideration, N2.6 billion was earmarked for…
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has filed a suit before a federal high court in Abuja seeking the sack of all national working committee (NWC) members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The Abdullahi Adamu-led NWC took over the affairs of the APC after the party’s national convention in March. In a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1864/2022, and filed through Ayo Ajibade, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), the PDP is contesting the legality of the process that produced the party’s national officers. The suit is predicated on a recent judgment of a federal high court, which nullified the nomination of Gboyega Oyetola,…
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva narrowly defeated President Jair Bolsonaro in a runoff election on Sunday that marked a stunning comeback for the leftist former president and the end of Brazil's most right-wing government in decades. Brazil's Supreme Electoral Court declared Lula the next president, with 50.9% of votes versus 49.1% for Bolsonaro. The 77-year-old Lula's inauguration is scheduled for Jan. 1. The vote was a rebuke for the fiery far-right populism of Bolsonaro, who emerged from the back benches of Congress to forge a novel conservative coalition but lost support as Brazil ran up one of the worst death…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the preliminary number of registered voters in Nigeria is 93.5 million. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, said this on Wednesday at the third quarterly meeting with political parties. Following the suspension of continuous voter registration (CVR) on July 31, the number of persons who completed their registration was announced to be 12,298,944. Yakubu, however, said after cleaning up the voter data using the automated biometric identification system (ABIS), a total of 2,780,756 (22.6 percent) were identified as ineligible registrants and invalidated from the record. He said the remaining 9,518,188 new voters have been added to…
A federal high court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital, has nullified primaries conducted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. A claimant, George Orlu, and four other persons identified as aspirants had filed a case before the court seeking a nullification of the primaries over their alleged exclusion. E.A. Obile, the presiding judge, gave the ruling on the grounds that the plaintiffs were unlawfully excluded from the primaries. The court ruled that those whose names have been submitted as having been elected from the primaries should not be recognised as validly-elected candidates for the APC in…
Former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak is set to become Britain’s next prime minister after winning the Conservative leadership race Monday — and now faces the huge task of stabilizing the party and country at a time of economic and political turbulence. Sunak will be Britain’s first leader of color, and the nation’s third leader just this year. He will take over as prime minister from Liz Truss, who quit last week after 45 tumultuous days in office, leaving a staggering economy and a shell-shocked and divided party. His only rival, Penny Mordaunt, conceded and withdrew after failing to reach the…
