The absence of Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), at the peace pact of Thursday has stirred reactions. Although he was represented by his running mate, Kashim Shettima, his absence sparked outrage, especially in the Nigerian digital sphere. Nigerian human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, via her Twitter handle, stated that the APC presidential candidate ought to sign the peace pact himself. She said, “No way should anyone be signing a peace accord on behalf of anyone! Bola Ahmed Tinubu has to sign for himself.” Rinu Oduala @Savvy Rinu wrote: Bola Tinubu didn’t attend the peace accord…

The results of the survey conducted for Bloomberg News by Premise Data Corp. published yesterday as campaign officially kicked off, showed Obi scored 72% among those who have decided to vote. Court nullifies Ogun PDP gov primary, others

A Federal High Court in Abeokuta has nullified the primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State that produced Ladi Adebutu as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2023 general election. The court ordered that the party should hold an all encompassing primary with the duly elected delegates. While presiding over the matter on Tuesday, the judge, O.O Oguntoyinbo, in his judgment ordered the party to conduct another primary within the next 14 days. The court also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising Adebutu as the governorship candidate of the party in the state.…
PRESS RELEASE Before the political parties conducted their primaries, a journalist asked what is my view about the 2023 general election? I answered and said the country should be restructured before the general election, and he followed up by asking if there should be an election, which zone should the Presidency come from? And I unhesitatingly said, of course, the Southeast. After the primaries and the candidates emerge with Bola Tinubu from the Southwest, APC, Atiku Abubakar on the platform of PDP and Peter Obi on the platform of Labour Party and I announced Afenifere’s support for Peter Obi, not…
Italian voters shifted sharply, bolstering prospects the country could have its first far-right-led government since World War II, partial results Monday from the election for Parliament indicated. In a victory speech, far-right Italian leader Giorgia Meloni struck a moderate tone after preliminary results in Sunday’s national election showed her Brothers of Italy party leading contenders. “If we are called to govern this nation, we will do it for everyone, we will do it for all Italians and we will do it with the aim of uniting the people (of this country),” Meloni said at her party’s Rome headquarters. “Italy chose…
As Nigerians look forward to electronic transmission of election results in next year’s elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the country is close to transiting to electronic voting. Also, INEC has revealed that it would use 1.4 million adhoc staff to conduct next year’s election. Speaking in Lagos yesterday, at Editors Forum organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) as its contribution in deepening democracy ahead of 2023 elections, INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, said Nigeria has already met three of the four requirements for electronic voting. Earlier, in his welcome address, President of the NGE,…
Presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart, Atiku Abubakar, have reacted to an opinion poll conducted by NOI, which indicated that the candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, would defeat them in the 2023 election. Tinubu, who spoke through the director, Media and Publicity of his presidential campaign council, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday, said he is unperturbed, describing the poll as unrealistic and fake. A poll conducted by Ngozi Okonjo Iweala (NOI Polls) and commissioned by the Atedo N. A. Peterside (ANAP) Foundation showed that Obi would win if the…

Swedish PM resigns as right-wing parties win vote

Sweden's prime minister says she will stand down after her government was defeated in Sunday's election. Magdalena Andersson's centre-left coalition looks set to narrowly lose to a bloc of right-wing parties, 176 seats to 173, with 99% of the votes counted. Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson is now expected to form a government. The bloc includes the Sweden Democrats, a far-right party that has campaigned against rising gang shootings. The final result is still to be confirmed after a recount, which is standard practice in Sweden. But despite this, Andersson accepted defeat at a news conference on Wednesday, and said…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has detected several invalid registrations during the clean-up of the register from the recently-concluded voter registration exercise. The continuous voter registration exercise (CVR) ended on July 31 — thirteen months after it began. In April, the commission had said 45 percent of registrations done in 2021 were invalid. The commission has previously given reasons for invalid registrations as multiple registrations and incomplete data. In a statement on Monday by Festus Okoye, its commissioner for information and voter education, the commission said it would provide the public with details after the clean-up exercise has…
