NDDC owes over N2 trillion debt – Minister

Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr Godswill Akpabio, has said Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has over N2 trillion debt to settle. Akpabio stated this at a meeting with management team of NDDC on Wednesday in Abuja. He said that the commission had not performed well in its main responsibility, which was the development of Niger Delta region. He stressed the need for collaboration between the ministry and the commission…
Prime Minister Boris Johnson called Wednesday for a national election on Oct. 15, saying it was the only way out of Britain’s Brexit impasse after lawmakers moved to block his plan to leave the European Union next month without a divorce deal. But Parliament delivered Johnson his third defeat in two days and turned down a motion triggering a vote. Johnson indicated he would try again, saying an election was the only way forward for the country, and accusing opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn of being afraid of the public’s judgment. “The obvious conclusion, I’m afraid, is that he…
Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam withdrew the extradition bill that sparked months of demonstrations, bowing to one of the protesters’ demands in the hope of ending the increasingly violent unrest. But activists rejected Wednesday’s move as insufficient and vowed not to yield until the government accepts other demands including an independent investigation into alleged police brutality against protesters, the unconditional release of those detained and democracy. The bill would have allowed Hong Kong residents to be sent to mainland China for trials. It has prompted massive protests since June that have disrupted transportation links around the city and at its…

Federal Executive Council meeting postponed

PRESS RELEASE Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting will not take place today Wednesday, September 4, 2019. This is due to the fact that all the memos earlier submitted to the Council for consideration have been returned to the various Ministries. This action will allow Ministers recently sworn in have their inputs in the memos sent by their predecessors in office. Similarly, the period is to enable Ministers, who are still taking briefs from bureaucrats in the Ministries and familiarising themselves with their work space, have more time to contribute to discussions at the meeting. They will also utilize the period…
A Palestinian student who was controversially denied entry to the US last month when he arrived to begin study at Harvard has now been admitted. Ismail Ajjawi said he was barred entry after border agents questioned him for hours at Boston Airport over social media posts written by friends. The 17-year-old was admitted on Monday just in time to start at Harvard. The US state department announced in June that most visa applicants were being asked for social media details. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) told BBC on Tuesday that Mr Ajjawi had overcome "all grounds of inadmissibility and was…
Nigeria’s multiple security problems have created a crisis that requires urgent attention and could lead to instability in other African countries if it is not addressed, a United Nations rapporteur said on Monday. Security forces in Africa’s most populous country are trying to tackle a decade-long Islamist insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest and bloody clashes between nomadic herdsmen and farming communities over dwindling arable land in central states. Agnes Callamard, U.N. special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, said Nigeria was a “pressure cooker of internal conflict”. “The overall situation I have found is one of…
Supreme Court on Monday criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for using a senior state counsel at the Ministry of Justice, Mr Abdullahi Abubakar, for his private election-related trial. The apex court made the observation while delivering a ruling in a suit accusing the president of lying on oath. Three appellants had filed the suit alleging that Mr Buhari lied on oath in a form he submitted to the electoral commission, INEC, for the 2019 election. Supreme Court dismissed the main suit against the president for being statute-barred. The judgement by the five-member panel was read by Mrs Mary Odili, but the…

The Mambilla project is currently a subject of litigation instituted by Messrs Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited. The issue in dispute, according to a report by The Cable, is a claim by the plaintiffs that a $5.8bn contract for the construction of Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project on the basis of Build, Operate…
