WESTERN PERSPECTIVE Russian mercenary firm claims strategic Ukrainian town of Soledar, control unclear Ukraine's eastern salt mining town of Soledar hung in the balance as Russia's mercenary firm Wagner claimed control, but continued fighting and Kyiv's assertion earlier that its forces were holding out raised uncertainty. Soledar has been the focus of intense fighting as Russia has viewed it as key to its campaign for the nearby strategic city of Bakhmut and Ukraine's larger eastern Donbas region. Reuters was not able to verify conditions on the ground. "Wagner units took control of the entire territory of Soledar. A cauldron has…
Department of State Services has arrested the Kano State governorship candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, Abba Yusuf. Yusuf was said to have been arrested on the order of the wife of the Director-General of the DSS, Aisha Bichi, following a confrontation between the duo at the VIP lounge gate of the Aminu Kano International Airport on Sunday night. The governorship candidate’s convoy was said to have caused traffic congestion which prevented Bichi’s convoy from gaining access to the VIP lounge. In a move to clear the ensuing traffic gridlock, there was an altercation between the DSS operatives and…
A man was killed in the Ojota area of Lagos on Monday, as some ‘Yoruba Nation’ agitators held a rally. A Yoruba Nation group had planned to hold a “super mega“ rally in Ojota to continue their demand for a separate Yoruba country from southwest Nigeria. Police spokesperson in the state, Benjamin Hundeyin, said that a yet-to-be-identified man lost his life in the unrest. He said “normalcy has returned,” to the area. “Yoruba Nation agitators came out to disrupt normal activities and the police stepped in to prevent that,” he said via telephone. He noted that the Yoruba Nation members…
RUSSIAN PERSPECTIVE Macron speaks of ‘Putin’s paradox’ Russian President Vladimir Putin is not an “unpleasant” man, Emmanuel Macron has said, but that cannot be an excuse for launching a “war” on Ukraine. The French president made the bizarre remark during an appearance on Saturday at Les Rencontres du Papotin, a TV program hosted by a group of journalists with autism. Macron was grilled by the journalists on assorted issues, including his ties with Putin. “When you meet him like that, he’s not unpleasant. That’s the paradox,” Macron stated, adding that “there is nothing to justify starting a war.” The French…
Four days after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) directed commercial banks to suspend over-the-counter dispensing of the new naira notes and use their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) to ensure wider circulation, compliance level has been abysmally low as customers continue to get the old currency slated to be junked on January 31. Meanwhile, the policy on restriction on daily cash withdrawal takes off today, Monday, January 9. Under this arrangement, the maximum weekly limit for cash withdrawals across all channels by individuals and corporate organisations is now N500,000 and N5 million, respectively. Thus, anyone or organisation that has a…

"Over the past day, Russian intelligence means detected and reliably confirmed through various independent channels some temporary bases of Ukrainian servicemen in Kramatorsk," the spokesman said. WESTERN PERSPECTIVE The founder of Russia's most high-profile mercenary group said on Saturday he wanted his forces and the regular Russian army to capture the small city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine because it possessed "underground cities" that can hold troops and tanks. Russia's grinding more than five months-long push to try to take Bakhmut has puzzled some Western military analysts who have said that heavy losses incurred on the Russian side and the fact that Ukraine has built defensive lines to fall back to nearby mean any Russian victory there, if it happens, would be pyrrhic. Yevgeny Prigozhin, founder…
