Central Bank of Nigeria’s advances to the federal government rose 2,900 per cent in the last seven years to N23.8 trillion, an unprecedented rise that violated the law, stoked inflation and worsened the country’s debt burden. Central banks sometimes help governments to fund budget deficits, but such loans, called Ways and Means Advances, are tightly controlled as they can fuel inflation and distort monetary policy. In May 2015 when the Buhari administration came to office, the CBN’s loans to the federal government were N789.7 billion cumulatively. Since then, the government has drawn central bank loans each year at an unprecedented…
Data obtained from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, the agency responsible for the regulation of admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria revealed that out of over 1,256,494 candidates who applied for Medicine-related programmes in Nigerian public and private universities in three years, only 105,226 were admitted. The figures were obtained from the statistics of admissions for 2019, 2020 and 2021. Admissions for 2022 are still ongoing in some universities due to delays from the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and other university-based unions. Some Medicine-related courses in Nigerian universities include Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, Anatomy, Physiotherapy…
WESTERN PERSPECTIVE Ukrainians cheered from their balconies while their air defences blasted Russian missiles and drones out of the sky in the first hours of 2023, as Moscow saw in the new year by attacking civilian targets across Ukraine. Ukrainian forces shot down 45 Iranian-made Sahed drones fired by Russia on the first night of the year, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday evening, praising Ukrainians for showing gratitude to the troops and one another. "Drones, missiles, everything else will not help them," he said of the Russians. "Because we stand united. They are united only by fear." A stern…
New Year’s celebrations are sweeping across the globe, ushering in 2023 with countdowns and fireworks — and marking an end to a year that brought war in Europe, a new chapter in the British monarchy and global worries over inflation. The new year began in the tiny atoll nation of Kiribati in the central Pacific, then moved across Russia and New Zealand before heading deeper, time zone by time zone, through Asia and Europe. At least for a day, thoughts focused on possibilities, even elusive ones like world peace, and mustering — finally — a resolve to keep the next…

Court restrains DSS from arresting CBN gov

A federal capital territory (FCT) high court sitting in Maitama has issued an order restraining the Department of State Security (DSS) from arresting Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The restraining order was issued by M.A. Hassan, the presiding judge, on Thursday. Previously, a federal high court in Abuja declined an application by the DSS to arrest Emefiele over terrorism charges.
